Conversations with Veronica Black

Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Black.

Hi Veronica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was introduced to entrepreneurship at an early age. My dad was what we now call a serial entrepreneur. He had a snowball stand, a food truck (before food trucks became popular), was a property investor, a landlord, and a general contractor. In all of his endeavors, I was right there helping where I could. As a child, I thought, for the most part, it was fun and games, but later I realized it was serious business. I was learning about supply chains, inventory, creating invoices, writing checks, counting money, and trips to the bank. When I reached high school, I knew I wanted to run a business, and I started my academic journey of learning business management.

I learned at an early age that I had the gift of administration. I would help my dad organize his invoices, track expenses, and schedule. I was interested in knowing why we did what we were doing and if there was an easier way.

Along my life journey, I met many entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs who reminded me of my dad, but they did not understand the business aspects of operating a business. I found this to be very prevalent in the African American communities. Although there were resources to help business owners, they did not trust the sources, and it is still true to some degree today. Due to my experiences in my professional (mostly in the medical and public health industry which is why “wellness” is a word that speaks to me, I was very resourceful. Many people in my community who were entrepreneurs or thought about becoming one would reach out to me seeking guidance on various aspects of business. I was like a trusted agent for business advice. I enjoyed helping entrepreneurs refine their business operations with proper tools and strategies.

Today, I continue to play out the theme of my life by helping business owners overcome challenges to build sustainable structures and strategies that support their mission while fostering organizational wellness.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road. There have been many struggles, disappointments, and discouraging moments. Although administration is my area of expertise, marketing is not. For any business, marketing is essential; however they is so much information out there. Everyone claims they can assist with marketing, but many of the efforts have landed with little to no success. Staying focused amid the many distractions has been the greatest struggle.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
