Today we’d like to introduce you to The Basement Melons.
Hi The Basement Melons, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Daniel Buller (Drummer) and Jacob Morgan (Guitar and Vocals) have been playing together for close to 3 years now. After a change from a previous lineup, we stumbled upon Braden Chaffin, our bass player/vocalist. We had to overhaul our entire setlist, and sound after shifting to a 3 piece. Jacob had to switch from rhythm guitar and keys, to being the lone guitarist. We went from being just a cover band, to writing our own original music, and performing it around Kansas, and now touring small venues around the Midwest. From starting with little to no gear, cheap guitars, and playing covers, we started to be booked around the area. After making numerous connections, and friends around the surrounding areas, we’ve been fortunate enough to be able to share our music.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The original lineup was a full fledged cover band. After making the switch, Jacob had to sit and learn the guitar, as it is not his main instrument. We had to completely overhaul every song we had learned to play. We had to meet and try out new stuff to form what is now our sound. We started off playing all covers, and eventually started writing together, and forming some incredible chemistry. Venues who had known us previously were surprised to hear our new sound, but they still have us back! It has definitely not been an easy road thus far, but we are all having the most fun we have ever had musically together, and every time we meet, is a treat to just enjoy the love of making live music together.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We are a Topeka, Kansas 90’s inspired Alternative Rock band. We have been together for a little over a year now. We have played all over Topeka, Lawrence, and some in Kansas City and Wichita. We have also played Chicago, Des Moines, Fayetteville, Norman, and plan on hitting the road to play our music in new states over the Spring and Summer! We enjoy getting to make music for fellow music lovers. We feature just drums, guitar, and bass, with 2 vocalists. Our music spans genres, from Pop Punk/Grunge/Shoegaze. We classify as 90’s inspired, but really fit under the broad genre of Alternative Rock.
How do you think about luck?
The music industry definitely can provide good and bad luck. We’ve been on the receiving end of a lot of the good luck. We book a lot of our shows based on some lucky connections that we’ve made along the way. These connections have led to some really amazing opportunities and experiences for us.
