Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanner Voss.
Hi Tanner, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I started with colored pencil portraits and then transitioned to apparel design in school. I soon began to explore other printed materials by working a print production job, including vinyl installation. I started picking up my clients as my knowledge and skills improved. After completing my Associate in Arts Degree, I majored in Mass Media Communications with a focus in Advertising and minors in Graphic Communication Technology & Agriculture/ Horticulture Entrepreneurship. While working towards my Bachelor’s degree, I held the position of Creative Director at SECreative student ran media agency and pitched a rebranding proposal for a class-leading national company. I am currently taking the summer to work on my client-driven creative projects and searching for a company/agency that I can grow with and expand my tool belt to benefit more people. Until then, @tanner_voss.designs will continue to produce digital assets and services for clients, including businesses and non-profit organizations.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve struggled in many areas along the way to where I am today. Still, I prioritize taking something away from every situation and reminding myself that no one has everything figured out. You will make mistakes, but growth will only follow if you care for yourself. I will say that finding a work/life balance and taking care of myself both physically AND mentally has been the hardest to maintain but the most necessary. Creativity shines the brightest when you do.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
While most of the projects I do now are digital, colored pencil portraits/ realistic pieces were my favorite to work on. Drawing was something I mainly did for enjoyment because it brought me so much happiness working on something that had meaning to me that I could share with the world. I wasn’t as bold as I am now with my creativity, so I stuck to realism and learned precision from my work. Because of this, I knew I could do better every time I finished what was in front of me. Once I began building my knowledge on the digital side of creating, I spent more free time with Adobe over Prismacolor and found new ways to learn and express my creativity. My background, especially the agriculture side, has set me apart by opening more doors for me in the creative space by believing in my talents. I wouldn’t say I specialize in anything quite yet, except creative thinking. But I thoroughly enjoy a good rebranding and designing promotional materials. I deeply appreciate art and design and how it influences the world around us.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
There is risk associated with almost anything, especially bigger projects with more pieces involved. Pieces that all need the same care and attention as the next. I enjoy taking risks that are well thought out, and I rarely agree to anything right away. It’s important always to weigh options when making a decision that could completely make or break an outcome. Have a plan, and I would say do it if a risk is worth fighting for. Something incredible might happen.
