Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Mentzer.
Hi Sydney, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
After high school, I needed a better idea of what I wanted to do as a career. I knew I wanted to continue my education at the University of Kansas. I wanted to go there for more of the experience, more than anything, and the fact that all of my family has graduated from there. I was interested in working with children, so I studied early childhood education. During my first year, my focuses differed from where they should be, and I knew from that, that this was something other than what I love to learn. From there, I decided to go to an Esthetician school to pursue skin and makeup, where I found that I loved the idea of permanent makeup. The industry is different from what it used to be; it has grown and improved. I love making people feel beautiful and confident. After all, I know how confidence and appearance can affect someone because I have struggled in that area for a long time. Everyone has natural beauty, and I want to enhance your beauty while making you feel more beautiful and confident in your skin!
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
This has been a challenging road. I am only at the beginning of my journey with the beauty industry, but getting to where I am today, I have had many self-doubts and still do! However, believing in yourself and your abilities makes the most difference in my life. Mindset and determination are everything!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
There is something so satisfying about creating the perfect lips for each client. I have found the most enjoyment with permanent make-up in lip blush! I am still at the beginning of my journey with this career, so there is so much more to learn and perfect, but I am most proud of finding something that brings me so much joy. Also, being in a career where I can help others is important. What sets me apart from others is my genuine love for everyone, I have not always been this way, but now that I am, I love so big and genuinely want to know and help others; it brings me joy!
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was shy and not very confident in myself; I don’t think I realized it at the time, and to others, it may not have seemed that way, but looking at myself now, I look back and realize that I wasn’t. For as long as I can remember, I have been very involved in sports, volleyball, and basketball being my main priorities. I did have a passion for sports for some time. I did have so much fun. At a point, though, I fell out of love for both sports. They were not fun anymore at all for me, and they were causing me more heartache than anything. Falling out of a passion for sports was caused by many things. At the time, I was weak-minded and let many coaches and teammates affect me. Covid hit the end of my junior year, and I was stuck in the house for some time, as we all were. After contemplating for a long time for a senior year, however, I decided I wouldn’t put myself through this anymore. Yes, I was going to miss the game, but it was not worth putting myself through that anymore, so I decided not to be involved in sports anymore, and I am thrilled that I did. After quitting sports, I focused on schoolwork and my relationships with my friends and family.
