Conversations with Sierra Otto

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Otto.

Hi Sierra, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up on a ranch in the Flint Hills of Kansas outside of Manhattan, Kansas. From an early age I loved to draw and collect stones on the prairie. I received a BFA in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design from the University of Kansas and worked as a jewelry designer for Silpada Designs before launching Sierra Winter Jewelry in 2015. I live in the Brookside neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri. You can find me at local farmers markets, dining at one of the amazing restaurants we have in the neighborhood, or a concert at Knuckleheads!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not! I think we all learn through trying and failing, trying and failing, and when we do it enough we learn a lot on the way! In those early days of SWJ, I had to find suppliers, make a website, sell, market the line, travel to meet with stores, design, all on my own. I also had a baby the same time I launched my business so throwing that into the mix made for a crazy time.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I design high-quality, handcrafted sterling silver and gold vermeil jewelry here in Kansas City! Our pieces are classic with a unique twist. You can dress them up, or dress them down with jeans and a white tee. Of all the awesome things I get to do in my business, I am the proudest of my drawings that come to life in the form of jewelry. I love the design process so much. I am also proud of how the line has been received by our customers all over the country! We have a decent list of celebrities and cool people that rock their SWJ too.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
In October 2020, we opened our first brick and mortar in the Brookside neighborhood of Kansas City! We carry the entire line along with gifts from some of our favorite female-founded brands.
