Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Cook.
Hi Sierra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve known since high school that I wanted to be a therapist. Right after completing my undergraduate degree, I immediately enrolled in the master’s program at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas. That experience deepened my passion for helping people, and during my internship, I was blessed with the kind of autonomy that allowed me to truly learn what it would take to run my own practice.
With the encouragement (and loving push) from my amazing husband, I took a massive leap of faith and opened Fearless Counseling the moment I graduated. I chose the name Fearless Counseling because I believe that to escape fear, you have to go through it—not around it. When we trust ourselves to survive our mistakes and grow from them, we build confidence and resilience. That’s the kind of transformation I aim to help others find.
I’ll never forget those first few months—completely terrified, unsure if I’d even make rent. But through God’s provision and grace, I kept going. More importantly, I kept growing. Within my first year, the practice began to thrive through word-of-mouth referrals. That’s when I really began to understand my value and stepped boldly into marketing and expanding the practice.
Since 2022, Fearless Counseling has taken off—and I give all the credit to God. I’ve had the privilege of sitting with individuals and couples during some of the most vulnerable, transformational seasons of their lives. Earlier this year, I hired another therapist to help us reach even more people, and we were honored to be named Best of KC for Mental Health Services by The Kansas City Star.
It’s been a journey of trust, faith, and fierce commitment—and it’s only just beginning.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. There have been plenty of moments where I found myself asking, “What am I doing?” Starting and running a practice comes with a lot of unknowns—and a lot of failure. I’ve had to learn how to rely not just on myself, but on God and the people He’s placed in my life for support and wisdom.
There were times when I questioned my worth, undervalued my work, or felt overwhelmed by imposter syndrome. I had to grow through that and learn to truly value myself and the impact I bring to others. I also had to humbly recognize my own limitations—and that’s never easy. But instead of letting that stop me, I’ve used it as fuel to keep learning, trying new approaches, and showing up better for my clients and myself.
The road has been anything but smooth, but every trial has shaped me into the therapist, leader, and woman I am today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At Fearless Counseling, we work with individuals and couples from ages 14 to 65 and beyond. From premarital sessions to everyday marriage counseling, from teens navigating identity to adults battling anxiety, trauma, and burnout—we meet people wherever they are.
What sets me apart is my approach: I’m real. I don’t put on a therapist mask when I walk into the room. My clients get me—a human being who is honest, direct, and grounded in compassion. Therapy isn’t cheap, and I take that seriously. I’m not here to waste your time, sugarcoat things, or become your best friend—but I will always be friendly, present, and committed to your growth.
I believe the most healing happens when we stop pretending—so I don’t pretend either. I bring my full self into every session, and that authenticity helps create space for clients to do the same. That’s what I’m most proud of: the trust I’ve built and the transformation I get to witness every day.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Knowing I’m walking in the exact calling God placed on my life—that’s what brings me joy. I love helping people, but more than that, I love watching them begin to see themselves the way I see them… and ultimately, the way God sees them.
There’s something incredibly beautiful about witnessing confidence being built in real time, or watching reconciliation unfold between two people who came in thinking they were out of hope. Seeing someone take actual, intentional steps toward changing their life for the better—it never gets old. It reminds me why I do what I do, and why it matters.
