Conversations with Shelby Campbell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Campbell.

Hi Shelby , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in South Overland Park and went to Blue Valley High School. I was a part of the Academic Honor Society and received the “Woman of the Year” award in my senior year. I played basketball and volleyball all 4 years. I accepted an academic and athletic scholarship to Rockhurst University and played basketball there, as well as went to nursing school. I graduated from Rockhurst and Research College of Nursing in 2013, where I was included in the GLVC All-Academic Team and Dean’s list. I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. From there, I accepted a job in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the University of Kansas Hospital. I worked there for 6 years. During that time, I completed my Master of Science in Nursing through Maryville University in St. Louis as a Family Nurse Practitioner. I got connected with my Medical Director now, Dr. Gaumer, who introduced me to the world of Functional Medicine. I trained with her starting in 2020, where I saw patients for a variety of functional medicine needs. In 2021, we launched the aesthetic side of our business, where I helped to grow that. I am now Executive Director of Aesthetics at Regain Functional Medicine, where I spend most of my day using my creative and artistic side to bring my patients’ aesthetic goals to life. I love what I do. It is truly a dream career for me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been plenty of ups and downs to get to where I am today. I would say the biggest struggles were deciding to return to school while still working in the hospital, and having my first child before completing my board exam to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. I also accepted my first job as an NP, which was not a passion of mine, but was necessary financially. I was told “no” to so many job applications. Getting rejected was probably the most difficult thing for me. It made me question my path. While I was working full-time and had a family, I decided to use my free time to shadow and network with those who would let me into the dermatology/aesthetic space. It was a lot of unpaid hours to get me connected to the people and space I wanted to work in.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner. I specialize in injectables, including neurotoxin, dermal fillers, biostimulators, PDO threads, and regenerative treatments. I am also trained on our Functional Medicine side, which mostly includes hormone replacement therapy, weight loss, and a variety of other lifestyle-focused treatments. I am most proud of how hard I have worked, always pursuing my goals and making my dreams a reality. I kept believing in myself when other people didn’t. What sets me apart is my patient-centered approach and the relationships/trust that I build with my patients. I truly care about them as people and take the time to listen. I care about being a kind and compassionate person and will always make that a priority, no matter where my career takes me.

What matters most to you? Why?
God and my family will always be my number 1. Everything I do is with them at the forefront of my mind. I try to lean in and pursue my purpose. I want to love others to the best of my ability every day. I want my kids to know they can do anything they put their mind to, and for them to be proud of their mom.
