Hi Sasha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Dr. Sasha Hamdani is a board-certified psychiatrist and ADHD clinical specialist. She was accepted into an accelerated medical program through University of Missouri–Kansas City. She was accepted into Psychiatry residency training at University of Arizona Phoenix program and completed her final year of training at Kansas University. She currently has a thriving private practice in Kansas City where she sees patients six years old and up.

She also has a robust social media following on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube (@thepsychdoctormd) where she provides evidence-backed information and dispels stigma around all facets of wellness. Her book Self-Care for People with ADHD was released through Simon and Schuster in 2023 and her next book is set to release in Fall of 2026. Her comprehensive ADHD management app FocusGenie launched in Fall of 2023. She delivered her TEDx Talk How to Hack Your Brain for Better Focus in August of 2024.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. From a strictly logistical standpoint, when you’re building something at the intersection of medicine, mental health, and media, there isn’t exactly a well-paved path to follow. I’ve had to figure out how to balance being a practicing psychiatrist, a mom, a creator, and an entrepreneur all while managing my own ADHD. That means I’ve had moments of burnout, self-doubt, and feeling like I was spread way too thin.

One of the biggest struggles has been fighting stigma. Not only the stigma around ADHD and mental health, but also the skepticism about using nontraditional platforms like social media to educate and advocate. Early on, I had colleagues who didn’t understand why I was putting my energy into Instagram or TikTok. They saw it as unprofessional, when I saw it as essential to reaching people who otherwise wouldn’t have access to this information.

And finally, there’s the personal side. My dad’s passing was a seismic event that reshaped me. It deepened my understanding of grief and focus, but it also forced me to navigate the most personal loss of my life while staying public-facing in my work. It taught me that being vulnerable about your struggles doesn’t weaken your credibility, it actually strengthens your connection with others.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I just transitioned to have my very own psychiatry practice where I can integrate psychiatry, therapy, and a deep understanding of the brain. What I’m most proud of is building tools and resources (whether through my book, my app, or social media) that make mental health information relatable and actionable for people who may not otherwise get support. What sets me apart is my ability to bring clinical rigor together with personal transparency. I live with ADHD and hormonal changes myself, so I understand the science and the lived experience, and I think that combination helps me connect with people in a unique way.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Mentorship doesn’t have to be formal. Sometimes it’s just identifying people whose work inspires you and reaching out with genuine curiosity. I’ve also learned that networking works best when it’s about building real relationships, not just opportunities. Share what drives you, listen to others, and look for ways you can also add value.
