Today we’d like to introduce you to Samuel and Andrew Tady.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Our names are Samuel and Andrew Tady and are two filmmaking brothers from the Kansas City area. We have always been interested in telling stories, mostly for our own entertainment. As kids, we always had a flair for the fantastical and would make up elaborate stories when we’d play and often with props and costumes in tow.
We got into film as teens through watching behind-the-scenes documentaries on our favorite movies and realizing that there was a lot of stuff that we were capable of doing with just our home video camera.
Easily amused and naïve as we were, we thought everything we were making was great! Looking back on some of those early projects is fun because clearly, we weren’t as good as we thought, but it was probably that blind confidence that made us keep creating and building our skills through trial and error.
It was really when we got to college that we learned how to polish those skills and turn them into something more marketable. It was at that point we started collaborating with more artists and here we are, ten years later, still making things with people we love and also using our skills to make a living. We do everything from commercial work, to short and feature films. Much of our work can be viewed on our Tady Brothers Productions YouTube page.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been relatively smooth, we are pretty fortunate in that regard.
We’ve always had good support from each other and friends. It’s hard sometimes financially to self-fund the majority of our creative ventures but the end result is rewarding, One struggle, that we’re sure isn’t unique to us, is burnout. Often to be seen in today’s media-saturated world a constant output of content is often deemed more important than the quality, and this can be difficult to keep the ideas fresh and the experience fun.
The way we try and mitigate this is to focus on the work, and less on the perceived expectations.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are filmmakers working out of the Kansas City area who work under the name Tady Brothers Productions, whose main focus is narrative work. It makes us most proud when a film comes together and the cast and crew all get to see the fruits of their labor and enjoy it.
It’s especially humbling when we receive awards and recognition for passion projects like our ‘Sherlock Holmes’ series or more recently the Sci-Fi film ‘Under the Sun’. I think what sets us apart is our visual brand of storytelling. It’s fun to think outside the realm of what’s in our normal day to day and give it a bit of a spin.
It’s easy to feel limited by your resource constraints, but often with a bit of imagination and innovation, you can go beyond them if you think outside the box. Playing make-believe is what got us here and as long as we remember that, there are no limits.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something folks may not know, is that we are not the only Tady Brothers. We are the eldest of 5, with two more brothers and a sister who often makes appearances in our work.
