Conversations with Payton Lane

Today we’d like to introduce you to Payton Lane.

Hi Payton, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I gained an interested photography when I was in middle school, but didn’t start this journey professionally until 2017 when I bought my first camera, the Canon EOS Rebel T6. I have since upgraded to a Canon R6, Mark II while also shooting with a Nikon EM 35mm film camera.

I had taken a break for a couple of years as I started a career in insurance. After I had become acclimated to my new job, I rediscovered my love for photography at my church. I had been asked to take photos during the worship services and saw this as my opportunity to share my talents through serving. This new opportunity was nerve-racking at first. I had not picked up my camera in a while and I wasn’t sure if I’d still be proud of the content I create. It took me some time to find my style again, but I found that I was quickly reconnecting with my love for photography. It provided me a much needed avenue to express myself in a creative way.

After my little hiatus, I am glad to be back behind the camera, capturing the Lord‘s greatest creation, YOU!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Since starting back up, it has been a challenge trying to find my aesthetic. Three years have gone by and a lot has changed in my life, but I feel I have been able to reflect this new chapter of Payton Lane Photography through every session.

When I first gained an interest in photography, I had no knowledge or understanding. While this might be seen as a red flag, it allowed me to use my creativity with no boundaries. Over the years, I have learned so much about the technical side of photography and been able to further evolve my styl

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Kansas City photographer based out of Parkville, Missouri. I specialize in family, couple, early childhood/motherhood, and senior photos while occasionally booking weddings.

I have a background in early education/childhood development and have worked within the youth department at my church for the past five years. Watching people grow and develop their own stories brings me so much joy. I am an extrovert and believe you can never know enough people. Creating a comfortable space where people can be vulnerable is my number one priority. I want my photos to be an authentic representation of each client and their session with me.

My availability is a little different as I have a full time career in the insurance industry. My photography schedule usually counteracts a 9 to 5 leaving my evenings and weekends open for bookings. I try to be flexible and accommodating if there is an issue with scheduling.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I strive to capture not only the pretty headshot, but the feelings and emotions within every session. I believe everyone’s story is unique and should be documented in a beautifully authentic way.

Time goes by too fast! Every second is precious and shouldn’t be taken for granted. One of the most beautiful things about photography is that it’s a way for generations to look back and experience together. Helping others document these moments to have forever is such a blessing I wouldn’t trade for the world!
