ODB Kels: A Voice for Authenticity and Empowerment:

ODB Kels is a dynamic artist known for her distinctive style and thought-provoking lyrics. With years of experience on stage and behind the scenes, she is dedicated to her mission of creating music that resonates with her experiences as a proud lesbian. “My main goal in music is to create songs that reflect my truth and empower others like me to embrace their identity,” she explains. “Listen to me as an artist—because that’s who I am.”

Raised in Kansas City, KS, Kels comes from a rich musical heritage. Her early years in church and involvement with JT Productions honed her skills in singing and acting. While working with AmeriCorps Vista, she made meaningful connections by teaching music to youth in a local detention center, introducing them to beat-making software.

After her Aunt’s passing, Kels relocated to Wichita, KS, to advance her music career. Collaborating with artists from Hi-Class and BeaztMode, she released her debut album, Kelscapade. Returning to Kansas City, she began working on her follow-up project, Kelsparade, and re-established herself in the local scene through open mics. Teaming up with Kaiyrie and Mac Mo Green, she co-founded 3 Kings Royal Empire, performing across various venues and sharing the stage with notable acts like Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.
Understanding the complexities of the music industry, Kels devoted time to learning its intricacies. She earned her Associate’s Degree in Audio Technology from Kansas City Community College and gained hands-on experience working with soundboard operations for various events throughout Kansas City and further afield, including a role with the leading audiovisual company, Diversified, in the DC area.

Feeling the pressure of the music industry, Kels hesitated to continue the next journey in her music career. Feeling lost, knowing that she was not the ideal image that sells music, kels decided to take a step back from music for a while. In this time Kels battled with her descion of not moving forward in her music. This brought on heavy depression, as she did not know what to do with her life. Refusing to let depression, and her descisons she made not get the best of her, Kels decided to give music another try after a lengthy hiatus. However during her time away she mangaged to heal from past trauma, trials, and tribulations that she was not ready to face. Also in this space, she wrote a book about dreams, and how her dreams helped her overcome stigmas such as anxiety, depression, and addiction. Her book “What Do My Dreams Mean: Understanding Messages from the Dream World” is available on Amazon.

After being laid off during the pandemic, Kels embraced a spiritual path, earning certifications in Herbalism, Kemetic Yoga, and Reiki. This period of introspection allowed her to reconnect with her creative spirit. Now based in Phoenix, AZ, she has engaged with the Get Free Movement in Tempe, collaborating with and learning from a vibrant community of artists.

Today Kels is once again back in her home town of Kansas City. Kels is passionate about crafting uplifting and affirmational music that inspires listeners to become the best versions of themselves. Working along like minded artist such as MMF Doobie. Grateful for her international experiences, she believes that life is a series of learning opportunities. As she reflects on her journey, Kels has shared moments with icons like Wendy Day, Future, MC Lyte, and Tech N9ne, among many others

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. Some of the many challenges that I have faced is self identity, depression, drug, and alcohol addiction. Learning how to love myself, and find that I am worthy of great things has been a task. Healing from childhood trauma, and unresolved life lessons is something that I am grateful for, even though going through the storm was not easy. Embracing my feminine, and intergrating it with my masculine has also been a beautiful transformation. Releasing old habits, and patterns, that no longer serve me has been a gift in itself.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have been performing since I was a child.I love to play the ukulele and drums, and my snappy lyrics and punchlines are known to leave my audience star-struck.

My psychic abilities are clairvoyance and telepathy, and I often indulge in decoding everything from the bible to dreams.

My style and aura have been known to intimidate the average person; however, my goal is not to scare the masses. Instead, it is to stay authentic to myself. I specialize in making diverse music that gives people a new, and unheard of wave of music that they can choose from.

I am most proud of my growth both as an individual, and an artist. I love that I am listening, and leading with my heart these days, instead of perceptions, and ideas of other people. What sets me apart from others is that I no longer run the rat race of chasing money, going along to get along, or doing things in order to be successful in today’s times.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the growth of Kansa City. There’s lots to do! I love the small things such as the bike lanes, and the streetcar. I enjoy going to the River Market on the weekends and getting fresh produce from the farmers.

I do not like the potholes in the roads.
