Today we’d like to introduce you to Mooji Mooji.
Hi mooji, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began my professional career as an IT developer in my early twenties. At first, I was focused on building my future in the field of software development. However, around the age of 22, I unexpectedly developed an interest in drawing, which gradually began to change the direction of my life.
What started as simple curiosity and a personal interest led me to teach myself how to draw. As time went on, my passion for art continued to grow, and I eventually made the decision to leave behind my established career as a developer and pursue an entirely different path in the world of art.
I went on to receive formal art education, further developing my artistic skills and techniques. I also worked as both an art instructor and an online educator, sharing the knowledge and experience I had gained with others.
During this time, I came across various tattoo artworks on Instagram and became fascinated by the idea of transforming traditional art into a different form of artistic expression on the human body. This inspired me to explore the world of tattooing, and since then, I have continued to develop my own path and artistic identity as a tattoo artist.
Looking back, I have explored several very different professions, from IT development to art education and ultimately tattooing. However, one thing has remained constant throughout my journey: my genuine passion for what I do and my commitment to consistent effort and perseverance.
I believe that growth and success in any field depend not only on talent, but also on how genuinely you love what you do and how dedicated you are to pursuing it over time. When you are truly passionate about something, you naturally find the motivation to keep improving, and even challenges, setbacks, and mistakes become valuable opportunities for growth.
The sense of accomplishment and the new possibilities I have discovered along the way have been my greatest sources of motivation, encouraging me to continue challenging myself and moving forward.
Throughout my career as a tattoo artist, I have had the opportunity to travel and work in various countries, meeting people from diverse backgrounds and experiencing different cultures. These experiences have greatly broadened my artistic perspective and influenced the way I approach my work.
I am currently based in Japan, where I continue to develop my career as a tattoo artist. Looking ahead, I am preparing for several new projects and opportunities, including plans to open my own private tattoo studio.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with most new challenges, my journey was far from smooth in the beginning.
Although tattooing is closely related to drawing and art, it requires an entirely different set of skills and expertise. From learning how to create intricate details directly on human skin rather than on paper or canvas, to understanding how different skin types and tones affect the tattooing process, there was always something new to learn and master.
In particular, working in different countries gave me the opportunity to meet clients with a wide variety of skin tones and characteristics. Learning how to adapt my techniques and artistic approach to each individual’s skin required considerable experience, experimentation, and trial and error.
Beyond the technical challenges, I was also responsible for handling nearly every aspect of my work independently, including marketing, client consultations, design development, and the tattooing process itself. This came with its own set of difficulties, as I had to develop not only my artistic and technical abilities but also the skills necessary to build and manage my own brand.
However, overcoming these challenges one by one brought me a great sense of accomplishment. Being able to solve problems that once seemed overwhelming and seeing how each experience contributed to my personal and professional growth became a major source of motivation.
Even today, I continue to face new challenges and unexpected difficulties. I believe there is still so much for me to learn, improve, and explore. However, I have come to embrace these experiences as an essential part of the growth process.
Ultimately, I believe that what truly matters is not finding a path without obstacles, but having the determination and perseverance to overcome them rather than giving up when difficulties arise.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a tattoo artist specializing in Micro Color Realism. My work focuses on creating highly realistic, photographic details even in small-scale tattoos. In addition to Color Realism, I also specialize in Black & Grey tattooing.
Micro Color Realism, in particular, is a highly demanding style that requires exceptional technical precision and concentration. It involves carefully capturing colors, shading, textures, and depth within a very limited space. I believe that every small detail contributes to the overall quality of a piece, which is why I always strive to achieve the highest possible level of craftsmanship, regardless of the tattoo’s size.
Over the years, I have continuously refined my artistic style and technical skills, primarily focusing on Micro Color Realism. Fortunately, my work has gradually gained recognition internationally, allowing me to build a growing reputation among tattoo enthusiasts around the world. When it comes to intricate details and realistic execution, I am confident that my work represents some of the highest-quality tattooing in Japan.
I believe one of my greatest strengths, and what sets me apart from other tattoo artists, is my versatility and ability to work across different artistic styles. Although Micro Color Realism is my primary specialty, I have consistently developed my technical abilities to deliver high-quality results in various styles, including Black & Grey and fine line work.
I do not see these different tattoo styles as entirely separate disciplines. The techniques and knowledge I have gained through exploring and studying various artistic approaches are interconnected, and these experiences ultimately allow me to create more refined, detailed, and technically accomplished pieces.
What I am most proud of is the growth I have achieved and the technical expertise I have developed throughout this journey. I did not start out with extraordinary talent or exceptional skills. Instead, I have built my current artistic style and abilities through continuous practice, dedicated study, and countless experiences of trial and error.
Moving forward, rather than being satisfied with my achievements in a particular style, my goal is to continue exploring and refining different techniques and forms of artistic expression, ultimately becoming a tattoo artist capable of consistently delivering exceptional quality across any style of tattooing.
