Today we’d like to introduce you to Merrick Henry.
Hi Merrick, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my journey in graphic design driven by a deep passion for art and communication, which led me to pursue formal education in the field. After gaining experience through various roles at renowned companies like Hallmark, Target, and the NFL, I refined my skills and developed a strong design philosophy. My experience in the industry inspired me to give back through education, leading me to teach at prestigious institutions such as SCAD and the Kansas City Art Institute. Currently, I am proud to be the head of the graphic design department at Park University, where I mentor aspiring designers while running my own studio, Studio Graphics 8, focused on creating impactful visuals that resonate with clients and audiences alike.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has certainly had its obstacles; it was not entirely smooth. After starting my teaching career at SCAD, I faced the challenge of adapting my industry experience to effectively engage and inspire my students. Initially, balancing the demands of teaching while maintaining my own design practice was overwhelming, but over time, my teaching role helped expand my industry network substantially. The connections I made during those early years of teaching opened doors to collaborations and opportunities that enriched my career, allowing me to bridge the gap between academia and the professional world. These experiences taught me resilience and adaptability, lessons I now share with my students as I guide them on their design journeys.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in graphic design with a focus on visual storytelling that resonates with audiences and drives brand identity. Known for my innovative approach and attention to detail, I create designs that not only meet client objectives but also push creative boundaries. One of my proudest achievements has been the recent opportunity to receive a grant to develop a digital embroidery curriculum to enhance our existing design programs at Park University. This initiative not only equips students with valuable technical skills but also integrates traditional craft with modern technology, setting our program apart from others. My commitment to bridging the gap between hands-on design education and real-world applications distinguishes my work, making it both relevant and impactful in today’s fast-evolving design landscape.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Born in Jamaica, I experienced a significant culture shock when I moved to San Fernando Valley, California, at the age of 12. This transition introduced me to a diverse array of new experiences and perspectives that profoundly shaped my identity. While my early years were filled with soccer (football) and cricket, school was always emphasized as a priority. As I settled into my new environment, my passion for drawing began to flourish alongside my love for sports. Eventually, I discovered a natural connection between art and graphic design, leading me to pursue graduate school at Kansas State University. After earning my degrees, I sought to deepen my expertise, which ultimately paved the way for a fulfilling career in education. I was fortunate to teach graphic design at the Savannah College of Art and Design, one of the best institutions in the country. These experiences have profoundly influenced my professional path and fueled my commitment to inspiring creativity in others.
