Conversations with Melissa Stroble

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Stroble.

Hi Melissa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my Instagram page, @lifewithmelissa1, in 2015 while I was working as a pharmacy technician and needed a creative outlet. I did not start taking it seriously until about 2019, after I lost my job and was trying to figure out my next move. I had been watching other people on Instagram and I thought, “Hey, why can’t I give that a try.”

I do have a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Marketing from Avila University and I thought maybe this was the time I could use some of what I learned and put that to work. I have started trying to grow my followers and working with some small brands doing campaigns for them. It has been a slow and steady journey, but you learn something new everyday and it allows me to create and meet new people that also have the same goals that I do. It is a rewarding experience. Plus, you get to help businesses, which is rewarding when they are happy with your work.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I have had to learn the hard way how to negotiate with brands on things like payment, due dates, what they expect. I have had to learn how to keep and gain followers. How to take my own pictures and what it takes to make your content interesting. It is all a learning curve where you learn something new everyday. You learn from others in your field or from your own research. Google and YouTube have been my research go-too.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My Instagram account @lifewithmelissa1 is basically a lifestyle page. It is a hodgepodge of things from pictures of my dog, my favorite skincare and makeup, books I am reading, musicals I attend, clothes I love, just anything I love and want to share. Most of the posts on my feed are flat lays or orchestrated pictures. I do dress my dog up sometimes with the holidays; I don’t think he appreciates that… lol. I am most proud of the compliments I get from the brands I have done work for, that makes it worthwhile.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I think what had helped me was using as many resources as I could, like Google and YouTube, when I had a question. Plus, there are great apps out there for editing pictures that are free to use, such as Lightroom, Pics Art, Canva, and Retouch. You can always find like-minded groups to join on Instagram that can help you out. Plus, there are coaches out there and tons of free information on Instagram; you just have to look for it; if you have a business or creator account, it is easier to locate the networking groups.
