Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt McCoy.
Hi Matt, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always wanted to use the gift of encouragement God has given me to inspire others. 12 years ago I was working from home and I thought to myself, I’m not having an impact on anyone’s life. I have to do something.” I looked over in the corner of my office and saw my guitar leaned up against the wall. I instantly thought, that’s it! I know a few chords that I can teach! At that time YouTube was not very popular but I still figured it is the only place I know to start.
I posted a few tutorials on worship songs I liked to play and the feedback was more than I ever could have imagined! I still didn’t know much on the guitar but continued to teach as much as I could. while I was trying to learn more myself. It still amazes me how if you take what tools you have and ask God to use them He will. Today I try to use my energy in videos to encourage people to play music and go throughout their day with a smile on their face.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
After a couple years of teaching guitar, I found myself really burnt out. I was working a full time job and didn’t have much of a desire to do videos. Certain comments and emails I received from people really helped change my perspective and many years later I remind myself why I do what I do. This makes it easier to push through any struggles I may have.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a YouTube Music Teacher since 2008. I think the main difference in my channel and most other guitar teachers is my spirit. and attitude I don’t take myself too serious and I would never edit out a mistake in a video. I want to always be seen as real and authentic. I sing off-key, I miss chords and I struggle often with strumming but it’s those errors and “Flaws” that I think my subscribers enjoy and can relate so much to.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I think with me, I have been lucky with the rise of country music in the recent years. Artists such a Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen, etc will always bring a lot of viewers to my channel. I’m fortunate to have grown up with a love of all types of country music.
