Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Moon.
Hi Maggie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! I’m Maggie Moon (real name, Maggie Boone), and I grew up in Olathe, KS and have been singing my whole life. I began taking piano lessons in second grade and sang in choirs growing up in both school and at church. I went to Benedictine College and studied music education and vocal performance with an emphasis in music composition.
I started off my working life as a music teacher, but my dream was always to perform. Although I knew this, I was nervous and didn’t quite know how to get involved in the industry, but when the world shut down, I decided, that yes, it was time to take a chance on myself and on my dreams, so I did! As things began opening back up, my husband and I began designing pop up bars (with an amazing team of humans!) and he had the idea of adding in some performance elements to our pop ups, which led to me getting to work with a lot of musicians in the Kansas City area and learning a lot about the industry. Soon after this, a wonderful friend reached out and told me to come to her show and audition to be a dueling piano player, and that’s when my music journey really kicked off!
I played at various clubs and private events as a dueling piano player while slowly building up my name and my show as a soloist and singer/songwriter. With a wonderful community surrounding us, my team and I were able to crowdfund a Kickstarter campaign to create my debut EP, Delaware Street, which featured songs I had written over those past few years. Shortly after releasing my EP, my husband and I found out we were going to have a baby, which meant that my solo life as an artist was going to drastically change. Luckily, shortly after we got our good news, I met my friend, Greg Bowman, who happened to be kind enough to carry my equipment for me when I was no longer allowed to and was also a fantastic drummer!
From there we started piecing together our band, Maggie Moon, featuring Sean Imetengel as our bass player and Drew Ballantyne as our guitar player, Greg as our drummer, and me as our main vocalist and keyboard player. We started off doing a couple of shows here and there as Maggie Moon as well as performing as our Taylor Swift Tribute band, the Wildest Dreamers. This past summer we released our new song, Red Corvette, which really showcases a shift in my music from my earlier singer-songwriter ballad style to a more dream pop, dance influenced vibe.
Maggie Moon was recently nominated for the Pitch’s Best of KC 2025 for Best Song By A Local Band (Red Corvette), Best Vocalist (Maggie Moon), and Best Tribute Band (Wildest Dreamers) which is a huge honor to us all!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Haha, well… lets just say that I spend half of my time having the time of my life on various stages and playing the most wonderful shows, and the other half of my time doing everything I can to get those gigs to be able to play on those stages. Being a professional musician is so much more than getting to perform – it’s hours of work each week focussing on marketing yourself, reaching out to so many venues hoping that just one of them will send you a reply back, sending your songs to countless radio stations trying to get air time, singing back to back shows to get your name out there. There have been weeks when I’ve sat in my room, crying cause I can’t seem to get a show, and then there have been weeks were I am so busy with shows that I don’t have time to see my family…
All of this said, I absolutely love my life. I love playing music. I love singing. I love standing up on stage and being my full, true, goofy and silly self, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a musician – specifically a singer-songwriter. I perform all over, focussing mostly on the Kansas City area, especially since I had my baby. I am most proud of my songs, and when I get to sing them on stage to a room full of people… there is no feeling in the world that compares to that. It’s the most amazing feeling, being able to share your music and to connect with others. My music can be described as dream pop/pop/dance/”sometimes makes you want to cry your heart out because it’s so sad and all the heartbroken girlies can just get together and share our feelings” types of songs.
What sets me apart? I think it’s my energy. Every time I go on stage, I want, with my whole heart, to connect with the crowd. Every show is an opportunity (this is something I learned from some of the amazing musicians I have had the honor of playing with) whether it’s an opportunity to try something new, to make a new joke, to take a risk, to sing that new song, to meet someone new – there are so many opportunities every show – as long as you’re looking for them.
I think the thing that sets me apart the most though is how I feel about the audience – music, to me, is the ultimate gift. It’s a chance to connect people at a time when everything feels so disconnected – it’s a universal language of love and connection that I, as a performer, have the opportunity to share and to give to my audience. I go into shows with the mindset that life is tough, and I want to give my audience — whether they are a crowd of friends and family or a crowd of complete strangers — a gift of connection. I want to share some of my joy with them, so that hopefully they can share in that joy and leave my shows feeling happy.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Hmm… I would advise that you take a chance on yourself. You have to believe that you can do it, and you have to know that it is hard. It’s a lot of hard work, a lot of time and effort and energy spent on convincing others that it’s worth it to them to have you perform on their stage, and it’s a lot of discipline. I once heard a quote that said something along the lines of you basically have to be a little delusional on how much you believe you can do it…. and then you do it.
My advise is to go to open mic nights and meet other musicians, practice performing, go out to shows, meet people, watch your favorite performers and ask yourself “what do they do on stage to connect with their audience?”, record your music and record videos of you performing so you can send those out to venues – they don’t have to be professionally recorded, just create as much content as you can. Work on sharing your music and use social media to your advantage. Create create create… and believe in yourself.
