Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Davenport
Hi Liz, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My career as a portrait photographer took a circuitous route. It was while I was working in the news industry, that I fell in love with the impact photos can have on people.
As a reporter for a small local paper, the editors required me to photograph the news I covered, so I always brought my camera along, whether for sporting events or county commission meetings.
I segued into a brief career in marketing and then into graphic design, but photography was always a part of the job description.
I officially opened Sunshine and Shadows Photography in 2018 and haven’t looked back.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Many photographers who are just starting their careers suffer from imposter syndrome, and I was no exception. There are so many incredibly talented photographers in Kansas City, and I struggled to believe I deserved to be one of them.
The pandemic also really impacted my business in its early years. I was finally gaining some traction when the world shut down for several months.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a portrait photographer who loves deep shadows and moody light, and I specialize in high school seniors, personal branding, and families.
My goal is simple: to tell the story of the person I photograph. For high school seniors, that means creating a time capsule of their high school career. For my branding clients, I help them develop the visual voice of their businesses, and for families, I want our session to capture everything — the messy, love-filled chaos that is family life.
Wardrobe, location, and the use of light and shadow all play a part in achieving that goal.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I am a safe space and aim to put my clients at ease before, during, and after our sessions.
I love and embrace every human regardless of race, religion, or orientation. I accept and celebrate non-traditional, LGBTQ2S+, BIPOC, and disabled clients.
