Conversations with Lina Sattarin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lina Sattarin.

Hi Lina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started photography in high school through yearbook class, where I first picked up a camera and quickly fell in love with it. From there, I got into sports photography, which eventually led me to start doing photoshoots with friends and taking their senior portraits, where I really discovered my passion for portrait work. In college, I continued to grow by working in sports photography with Kansas State Athletics while also building my portrait work on the side. In 2020, I photographed my first wedding, an intimate courthouse ceremony, and immediately realized how special it is to be part of such an important, emotional day in someone’s life. That experience is what ultimately pushed me toward wedding photography full time after graduating from K-State. I officially launched my business in 2022 and haven’t looked back since. Over the past several years, I’ve been fortunate to photograph around 100 weddings, while also continuing to shoot senior portraits and branding sessions for local Kansas City businesses.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a perfectly smooth road. I never took formal photography classes or courses in college specifically for photography, outside of my high school yearbook class, so a lot of what I know came from hands-on experience, figuring things out through trial, error and constantly shooting. I learned the fundamentals early on, but a big part of my growth came from teaching myself editing, workflow and how to run a business as I went. Another challenge was balancing everything at once. I was running my photography business entirely on my own while also being a full-time college student, and later, after graduating, I was working two additional jobs, freelance social media work for an athletic conference and as a fitness instructor, while still building my business. Managing shooting, editing, booking, finances and marketing all at the same time definitely pushed me, but it also forced me to learn how to operate efficiently and build something sustainable from the ground up.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in warm, intimate and authentic wedding portraits. I like to describe my approach as a blend of documentary-style wedding photography with a more hands-on, intentional approach when it comes to direction. Instead of traditional “posing,” I focus on prompting my couples, I’m there to guide them just enough so they never feel awkward in front of the camera, while still allowing real moments to unfold naturally. I never want to disrupt genuine emotion or candid interactions, so I often take a “fly on the wall” approach throughout the day, while also knowing when to step in and create space for those meaningful, beautifully guided portraits. What sets me apart is that balance. I’m really intentional about preserving how the day felt, not just how it looked, while still making sure my couples walk away with elevated, timeless portraits that feel natural to them.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’m a very organized, type A person, so I honestly rely heavily on my Google Calendar, it’s what keeps both my life and business running smoothly. I also use HoneyBook as my CRM, which is essential for managing client workflows, inquiries, contracts and keeping everything streamlined from start to finish. Beyond tools and apps, one of the biggest resources for me has been the Kansas City wedding photography community. I’m really fortunate to be surrounded by such a supportive group of photographers here. Whether it’s having someone to second shoot or assist on a wedding day, or just being able to talk through ideas and challenges, that community has been incredibly valuable. I’m really grateful to have that kind of support system in such a competitive industry.
