Conversations with Katie Charles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Charles

Hi Katie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I had been writing my whole life. My mother was a published author and I aspired to be like her. She came to me one day and said there was an opportunity to write something to be published. A short story in the anthology Be Mused. I jumped at the chance. Seeing my words in print for the first time, was awesome! and the encroachment I needed to keep going. I wrote Land of Misfit Teens the summer before going to college. Dreams, being retitled Picture Perfect the summer between sophomore and junior year. And The Hand You’re Dealt my Senior year of college. Funny enough, I went to College for a Biology degree.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing is ever a smooth road. During my college years, while I was writing I had two extremely impactful deaths, My grandfather and older brother. Which I wrote into my books as I processed. I also was diagnosed with a rare neurological disease called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. I went from being active to wheelchair-bound. It took years for me to re-learn how to walk. The Hand You’re Dealt is a testament to this process.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Writing is something I have always loved. Stories allowed me to travel around the world and beyond. It allowed me to process what I needed at critical times. It will enable those who read my stories to process, ask questions, and hopefully improve their day. What I am most known for is probably when I got to tell one of my inspirations Tom Hiddleston – Loki from the Avengers, he inspired a character in a book. It became popular on YouTube and tumblr. I like to think, what sets me apart from others is how much I take real-life situations, my life situations and write about them in a meaningful way. So everyone who reads my books can connect to them.

What makes you happy?
My family, my 2-year-old daughter, and 8-year-old stepdaughter make me smile every day. And my amazing Husband supporting me every step of the way. Our pets running around acting like fools always get me laughing. My day job as a science teacher at a local high school as they are always keeping me on my toes. I also get emails from people who have read my books and take the time to tell me about them. I have them all saved.
