Conversations with Justin Roberts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Roberts.

Hi Justin , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2020 we began the process to become a licensed foster family in hopes of adopting one day. In February 2021 we were licensed and in March we welcomed our first emergency placement, a very scared little five-year-old who was homeless with mom. It wasn’t hard to fall in love with his sweet heart. Unfortunately, there was no way for reunification, but we selfishly were okay with that. We started the adoption process as soon as possible and in March 2023 we officially became a family of five.
I share our story because it’s what has led us here! We learned some harsh realities of those who age out of the foster care system and we can’t ignore them. Support is limited and at least half, find themselves on a trajectory of homelessness and crime.
Through coffee and hospitality, we are dedicated to nurturing a holistic environment for those who’ve aged out.
We desire to come alongside them with support, helping them find community and purpose. Neighbors will offer paid apprenticeships to those interested in learning: specialty coffee, customer service, shop maintenance, good business practices, and the value of people over profit. Our aim is to build them up and eventually launch them out with a strong foundation. This pathway will include interview guidance, resume building, communication coaching and more. All while creating a safe space for learning, growing, and friendship.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has had many twist and turns. Learning how to start a nonprofit business and building code and planning. We are still fundraising and hope to raise 20k this year.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My wife and I pastor a church called neighbors church. More information on that check out the website: neighborskc.church. I also have a full time Job doing data analytics which has helped a lot during the buildout! We are very passionate abut helping those in foster care. That’s why we’re doing this to help those who had a rough start in life. We want everyone we meet to feel loved, valued, and seen.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Have a great support team around you. Always ask questions and keep going even when it’s hard! Also road blocks will come dont be afraid of them just find the best path forward when they pop up.
