Conversations with Julian Shah-Tayler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Shah-Tayler

Hi Julian, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It’s been a good few years for: singer/producer/writer Julian Shah-Tayler aka The Singularity
He is currently very proud to be working with the legends Danny Saber (Rolling Stones, David Bowie, U2) Robert Margouleff (Stevie Wonder/ Devo), Alain Whyte (Morrissey), Mike Garson (Bowie), Carmine Rojas (Bowie) and David J (Bauhaus/Love and Rockets) as guests on his upcoming album: “Honne Tatemae” (to be released on 7th March 2025)
One of the shows he scored won two Emmys: “Actors on Actors”
He won a “Golden Trailer” award for his work with Lana Del Ray on Disney’s “Maleficent” trailer. It also saw one of his songs performed in front of Bill Clinton, Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese for “Unite for Humanity”charity at the Oscars.
Three of his songs were the “hits” for the focus band in the music movie “Plush” directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight)
He also recorded a sadly unreleased album with Joaquin Phoenix and Antony Langdon (Spacehog) as well as musical directing Island Def Jam artist Kerli
4 of his songs cowritten with Siobhan Fahey (Bananarama/Shakespear’s Sister) were the main songs for the Astrid Angel band in the movie “Riot On Redchurch St” directed by “Trip City” and Martin Amis’ “Money” author/director Trevor Miller
His remix of Nico’s “These Days” with Daisy O’Dell was featured as KCRW’s “one to watch” He also cofounded a charity called “Art Angeles” teaching underprivileged kids music in Watts. His Song “Talking In Your Sleep” also won the ASCAP/Homegrown Hits best song of 2013 earning sponsorship from Protools and ESP guitars

Born in Leeds, England and educated to a philosophy degree at York university, Julian moved to London as a singer songwriter with classical training on piano and self taught on guitar.
After abortive record deals with Alan McGee (Creation Records) he joined hip electro clash outfit “Whitey” as co-writer/guitarist recording many of the songs in his nascent home studio. After a complete breakdown in communication, Julian moved to LOS ANGELES to pursue his own project and had further success with licenses in TV and film in the USA

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is always a struggle to translate art into money, but the psychological catharsis and NEED to create are worth every moment spent on that journey struggling

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am most known for my 2022 #4 New Wave album “Elysium” which was on the Grammy ballot for Alternative album of the year.
My sound is described as new wave electro rock and I can never escape 80s references.
It is a blend of electronica and Rock with a decidedly arty and sometimes avant Garde flair.
I am very proud that I count so many brilliant and well known musicians amongst my friends and collaborators.
I play all the instruments on my records (excepting the special guests) and produce mostly on my own with occasional collaboration with Danny and Robert

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have to mention Robert Margouleff as one of my greatest cheerleaders. His encouragment is consistent and as he has in the past produced Devo and Stevie Wonder, his ongoing support is greatly appreciated. Danny Saber is a great supporter as well. I also work with David Chatfield, who has believed in me for many years and is releasing a series of remix songs with me.
