Conversations with Joshua Thornton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Thornton.

Hi Joshua, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It’s always been a dream of mine to be an artist. As a kid I was always drawing cartoons and comics, when I got older my art was mainly sketched portraits. In high school, my main focus was actually architecture. I grew to like computer-aided drafting but I realized what I actually liked about it was the artistic traits of it all. I enjoyed drawing on a computer, and that’s when I realized that I can use my ability and creativity in graphic design.

My senior year of high school was when I really grew to have a passion for graphic design. I had a great teacher who opened my eyes to the possibilities. Logo design, product labels, boxes, magazines, marketing, etc. There were so many ways to create artwork. Working in graphic design only made my love for art grow. Whether it was designing a business logo or graphics for a shirt I loved to create. I enjoy pushing myself to create more so I didn’t limit myself. There’s always more to learn, especially when it comes to art.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There will always be struggles but that’s what makes this journey worth it. Problems force us to adapt and grow in all facets of life. I’ll say that marketing yourself is definitely a lot more difficult than marketing for a company that already has an established following. I had to tell myself that it’s ok to fail sometimes.

You don’t have to win every time you try. It was too easy to get discouraged when things don’t come easily but having a solid support system is definitely key. I’ll always remember my wife leaving a note on my computer that says “Fail means First Attempt In Learning”

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I try to use the title “artist” as much as I can. I feel like that way my work isn’t compartmentalized into one genre. I specialize in graphic design, logo development, digital portraits, and custom artwork. I’m most proud of being blessed with friends and family that encourage and compliment me in a way that’s genuine.

I’d say my creativity is what sets me apart from others. I try to think outside the box as cliche as that sounds.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was kind of a nerd. I always got good grades, perfect attendance, and honor roll, loved video games and movies, etc. I was a bit of a class clown as well.

Even as an adult I love making people laugh. One of the best compliments I’ve ever gotten is that I should try to stand-up comedy.
