Today we’d like to introduce you to Jami Bowman.
Hi Jami, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been a very driven, creative entrepreneur; a risk-taker, which has led me to open a few different businesses. I was a single mom at 21 and had to find a way to raise kids on my own. I saw an opportunity and went for it. I decided to start a DJ/karaoke company. I went from venue to venue in 2001 until I had enough gigs to pay the bills. This ended up being a success and is still going strong for the last 22 years. I am known locally as DJ Jami. I still DJ a few days a week, at kid’s parties, company parties, and such.
Once my kids got older I decided to embark on my true passion, photography. I spent hours on end learning photography, the camera, lighting, and editing. I reached out to local photographers to mentor me. A few months into it a local magazine reached out to me and asked me to fill their photographer position. I was excited about that opportunity. I am still their photographer today, 7 years later. I do lots of different types of photography now, including families, events, products, and portraits. I have learned so much through this experience and look forward to each and every session. I opened an event venue in Gardner, KS in 2020, one month before covid. I held on for a year but then decided to pull the plug. Currently, I am opening a photography studio in Osawatomie, KS. I encourage others to not give up on dreams! When you are told as a kid you can be whatever you want it’s true! Visualize it and work every day to achieve it.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Smooth roads don’t exist much for entrepreneurs. It’s the struggle that you learn from. Covid was a huge one.
Opening an event venue in 2020 one month before they shut us down was tough. It was difficult but I learned a lot through that experience and it lead me to new ventures. I just had to take a sharp turn and a new path. It may not be the original path I wanted but It lead me to a path I love just as much.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a photographer and DJ. For photography, I specialize in events, lifestyles, families, portraits, and products. I shine most with product photography or stock photos. I am most proud of the fact that if I put my mind to something, even if I am not the best at first, I don’t give up until I master it.
What sets me apart is that I am a hard worker and desire to do the best I can at whatever job I am given. I will go above and beyond.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
That I stay up all night sometimes just to master whatever project I am working on. Also, I love to drive my 4-wheeler and have ducks and chickens.
