Conversations with Haylea Reed

Today we’d like to introduce you to Haylea Reed.

Hi Haylea, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been primarily cutting men’s hair for 11 years. For 6 of them I worked on & off at different shops in Topeka. I decided to move to Overland Park 4 years ago where I worked at a corporate shop until I could find a salon to build my clientele. I worked there for 2 years exactly & built my books but due to lack of growth for barbers within the company, I decided the only other choice was to open up my own suite.
Since then, it has been a whirlwind of growth & learning curves but I’ve loved every second of it. I believe the service I provide is more than just technical. Building community within my brand has been one of the most rewarding parts. I’m constantly looking for ways to show my appreciation for everyone that sits in my chair. I’m excited to share what’s to come for my business!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not! I think in the beginning of my career I had a lot of self-doubt & truly didn’t believe getting to where I am today was in the cards for me. Even before opening up my own suite, I didn’t realize how many of my clients were coming to me because they loved supporting me. When I started to tell them my idea to open up my own space, they were all so excited & it was an amazing feeling to know I’d be okay.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I do primarily men’s hair & specialize in clipper cuts or lived in styles! What I’m most known for is my ability to treat everyone I meet & that sits in my chair as someone I’ve known for years. It really is a gift to be extroverted in that capacity. It’s one thing I’m most proud of with building my brand, is being able to offer a safe place for clients to share their stories & feel instantly comfortable.
When it comes to what sets me apart from others, I personally believe everyone runs their business in a way that works best for them. I run mine with my values & mission in the first meeting. Through empathy & a desire to learn & foster community, I’m able to feel fulfilled in my craft daily & make a difference.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’m currently in a transitional phase for my business! I’m working on branding myself differently by incorporating more of who I am into my social media & shop. A few of those things include antiques, reading & writing!
