Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Tatum.
Hi Donna, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, I own and operate Magnolia Wellness in Overland Park.
I was working on a movie in Los Angeles. The night shoots, meals at odd hours and extreme weather shifts as we moved locations from the desert to the hills to the city left me feeling awful. I was exhausted, sleep-deprived and overwhelmed. A friend suggested acupuncture. I couldn’t believe how much more relaxed and focused I felt after one visit. Within a few months, my lifelong insomnia resolved, along with PMS & hormonal acne.
I was surprised by how quickly my acupuncturist zeroed in on a diagnosis, and the specific patterns and techniques he used to get there.
When I called my acupuncturist to get advice about choosing a Traditional Chinese Medicine program, he said he had known for years I would become an acupuncturist.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I moved back to my hometown, I looked around and tried to figure out what people here needed in order to thrive. I believe we need to customize treatment protocols to climate, seasons, and the energy of the area, because they all affect our health in different ways.
I decided to stop focusing on marketing and advice books and instead just focus on meeting people’s needs and finding solutions that work for each client. When you address the mind, body and spirit, the results are incredibly transformative.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a licensed acupuncturist and Traditional Chinese Medical Practitioner. I completed a 4 year Master’s program. Chinese Medicine is a science based, well researched medicine with diagnosis techniques that predates modern medicine by thousands of years.
I specialize in female health, migraines and complex, difficult to resolve cases. I treat the whole person. I use specific patterns unique to Chinese Medicine to pinpoint underlying stressors and emotional & physical imbalances in order to treat the underlying causes, not just symptoms. Someone once called me the Sherlock Holmes of acupuncture.
What I love most about my job is that Chinese Medicine is so deep and complex that I get to keep learning every day. Currently, I’m deepening my understanding of trauma and stress and how it affects us physically. As the kid who stayed up until 2:00AM reading Nancy Drew books under my covers with a flashlight, this is my dream job.
I like to educate and empower my clients so they can understand how to keep themselves healthy and prevent any recurring problems in the future.
