Conversations with Daniel Montoute

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Montoute

Hi Daniel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey as an artist began in Macon, GA, in 2015, where I discovered my divine gift for art and used it to foster deep connections with others, inspiring both emotional and spiritual responses. My first major project was Dark Eden, an event that brought together about 60 artists, performers, and entertainers. This event revitalized the local arts scene, sparking renewed cultural interest and laying the groundwork for my commitment to community-driven art initiatives.

Following Dark Eden, I became the Director of Ampersand Guild, an inclusive space that united over 200 artists and community members. Through this initiative, I created a thriving environment for artistic collaboration and growth, organizing exhibitions, open mic nights, and other community-focused events. These efforts helped to establish art as a powerful cultural and economic driver in the community.

After moving to Kansas City in 2023, my focus shifted to New Horizons, an exhibition that carries on the spirit of both Dark Eden and Ampersand Guild. Through New Horizons, I address homelessness by using art to raise awareness and generate direct donations for support, embodying my belief in the power of creativity to heal and uplift.

Throughout my journey, my work—whether paintings, murals, or community events—has aimed to foster compassion, reflection, and connection. I believe in the transformative power of creativity to honor the divine spark that connects us all, and I strive to honor the mission Christ left to “feed His sheep” by using my art not only to create visual impact but also to inspire positive change in society.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has certainly not been without its bumps, and I’m still putting in efforts to build a new network in Kansas City. Moving from Macon and establishing myself in a new city has been a significant challenge, especially trying to recreate the strong community ties I built through Dark Eden and the Ampersand Guild. It takes time to form those connections, and I’m working diligently to ensure that my art and initiatives resonate within this new environment.

With New Horizons, the journey has been both exciting and demanding. Our first show, featuring 8 talented Kansas City-based artists, was on October 4th, First Friday 2024, and getting everything organized required a lot of effort—from logistics to outreach and securing support for our mission. There’s always uncertainty in starting something new, but the excitement of showcasing these artists and using art to make an impact makes every struggle worthwhile. These challenges remind me of the importance of persistence and faith as I work towards honoring the mission of helping others and fostering community through art.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
While my work isn’t strictly abstract, I often incorporate colors that can be considered abstract, allowing me to express a range of emotions and ideas without always adhering to hyper-realism. My art blends aesthetic excellence with a deep commitment to community impact, aiming to evoke emotional and spiritual responses through vibrant color palettes and textured compositions. I use my art as a powerful medium to reflect God’s creation, fostering connections and inspiring positive change.

I am most proud of my ability to create spaces for artistic expression that engage both artists and the community. Initiatives like Dark Eden, which revitalized the local arts scene in Macon, and my ongoing work with New Horizons—which supports emerging artists while addressing homelessness—highlight my dedication to using art as a vehicle for social change.

What sets me apart from others is my unique blend of artistic vision and community advocacy. My role as a board member of reStart Inc. particularly enhances my perspective, as I believe that art and creativity can speak to issues like homelessness in ways that resonate deeply with individuals and foster empathy. I strive to create inclusive spaces that uplift both artists and the broader community. My artistic style reflects an improvisational flair, akin to jazz, combined with the disciplined ethos of a symphony orchestra. This approach invites viewers to explore the complexities of human experience while honoring the divine spark that connects us all. Ultimately, my commitment to fostering compassion, reflection, and positive change through art is what defines my work and sets me apart in the arts community.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
One surprising aspect that many people might not know about me is my journey into art. While I’m now recognized for my evocative pieces and community-focused initiatives, I actually discovered my passion for art relatively late. It wasn’t until 2015 that I fully embraced my artistic gift and began using it as a medium for connection and advocacy. Before that, I had a different career path and didn’t realize how deeply I could engage with others through creativity.

Another surprising element is my dedication to community service beyond the art world. Many see me as an artist, but I’m also a passionate advocate for social issues, particularly homelessness. My role as a board member of reStart Inc. is a testament to that commitment. I believe that art can be a powerful voice for change, and I strive to use my work to foster compassion and inspire action in ways that go beyond the canvas.

This dual focus—both as an artist and a community advocate—might not be what people expect, but it drives my work and shapes my mission to honor God’s creation through my art and service.
