Conversations with Courtney Brummett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Brummett.

Hi Courtney, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The first 18 years of my life were spent in a wooded suburban neighborhood perfect for biking, riding my Heelys and playing in the creek. My Dad was an entrepreneur and ran ‘Brummett Appraisal Services’ by himself. His pride in his business encouraged the entrepreneurial spark that found a home in my Brummett blood. I dream that this business would make him proud.

In 2013, I moved north for college. I majored in Business Administration with NO IDEA what I intended to do with my degree, but I knew that I wanted the knowledge and understanding that came with it. I spent my time participating in all school activities because of my hardcore extrovert soul and learned valuable lessons about female empowerment, owning a business and how to make a dream come to fruition.

After college, I tackled the corporate world and worked in the trucking industry… but I knew that my heart wasn’t with semi-truck drivers. I worked from 8:00-5:00 during the week and dreamt about my passions on the side. My bright heart didn’t thrive in a monotone office, but I wasn’t sure where to start or how to have a more creative, colorful life.

That’s when the magic happened. On a whim, I bought a Cricut machine and immediately had interest in earring orders from family and friends. I would work my nine hour corporate shift, work for two hours on Spot On Design in the afternoon when I got home, leave for dance practice and then finish my evening with more earrings. I never wanted to stop growing and improving my business and that’s why I’m here today.

My heart-driven life gives me the flexibility to make Spot On Design happen. I’ve returned home to KC, MO, with my boyfriend, Scott and our Mini Goldendoodle, Paisley. My mornings are full of coffee, Paisley snuggles, and hard work on earrings, keychains, monthly subscriptions, and other fun projects! This business makes me feel encouraged, empowered, creative, and confident. My goal is to make you feel that way too.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the short 1.5 years that Spot On Design has been open, we’ve relocated to Iowa, Alabama AND Missouri. The constant change has added difficulty to finding a physical location as well as creating a strong network. For example, we rented a booth for six months in Alabama! It was struggling to grow, but when it was finally generating a profit, we moved again. It’s hard to create long-term growth without roots. Luckily, social media continues to grow and make Spot On Design possible from any location!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Spot On Design is a small business with big hopes of empowering you to be unique and creative. We specialize in the design and creation of leather accessories including earrings and keychains! In addition, we also include customization options! Many individuals use these products to express their personal style or design personalized gifts at a reasonable price!  We often customize earrings and keychains for bachelorette parties, team gifts, sororities, and sports moms!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Due to COVID-19, I realized the importance of feeling confident in yourself, for yourself. It was easy to go without showering, without washing my face or without putting on makeup because I wasn’t expecting to see anyone… but then I realized the impact that had on my self-confidence. The way you present yourself is more impactful to you than it is to others. You should spend the time to take care of yourself and wear things that you love so you can be your truest, most confident self.
