Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin Grover.
Hi Colin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started skateboarding in 1983 and never stopped. I always loved the artwork on the boards. Everything about skateboarding is my life. The culture, music, lifestyle and art. Originally I wanted to start my own board company featuring my own art but I realized it was too much pressure on myself so I decided to showcase different artists from around the world. In a way I wanted the boards to be canvases that could be not only skated but hung on the wall.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been an extremely difficult journey. Skateboarding is a tough industry with a lot of ego involved. It can be hard to get shops to give you a chance but once they see our product in person, they realize how special the brand is. I’ve always strived for the highest quality products. From the wood to the artwork. Everything has to be the best quality. It took years to build our team and it’s one of the most important parts of having a skate brand.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m involved in every aspect of the company. I’m the art director, team manager, production manager and shipping team haha! I am super proud to be rolling the graphics myself. It’s super satisfying and I get to make sure everything is done properly.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I like to try and stay optimistic about the industry and believe that smaller brands will start to become more popular. I also think more companies will start making their own boards like I do. The DIY approach is going to take off!
