Conversations with Chudney Jemmerson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chudney Jemmerson.

Hi Chudney, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I am a product of legacy. I come from a long line of musicians and singers. My grandmother, Willa Mae Manning, was a dynamic pianist and choir director. My uncles, the Ray Manning Singers, have done this for 50 years. My father Melvin Manning is a wonderful singer who’s been singing just as long and created a group in his lifetime. He was the first man I heard sing soprano!!!

My aunt Marva Whitney (Soul Sista #1) was the sensational voice who sang with James Brown.

So, I got it honestly. However, I didn’t always embrace my voice or like the way I sound. I always sang in the choir in elementary school and high school. But I always hid in the tenor section. Or if I sang alto, I would try not to sing loud. It never worked though… lol.

When I started going to church as an adult that brought out something else in me. I joined the choir and sang in my section but always ended up in the front. The Director heard my voice and told me I needed to learn control, but I was strong enough to lead. I asked her to help me… and that was 15 years ago. Learning from fellow worship leaders, artists, and other mentors have helped me get where I am today.

I am more confident and today I love my voice. I understand the power of music and having a microphone in your hand. I choose to take my gift and make a difference singing about my Father God and my Savior Jesus Christ. I want people to know and feel God’s love through every word and note I sing.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My two biggest obstacles would be the opinions of men and my own thinking in a majority of cases. I have the tendency to let what people say or what I think they are saying stop my movement.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The majority of my singing career has been in the church. For 15 years, I have executed my artistry as a worship leader, choir director, and soloist. I have also had opportunities to lay background vocals for multiple local artists.

In the last 2-3 years, I started my new journey of becoming a solo artist. My music would be called soaking music. It’s not as wordy and the hook and instrumentation carry each song. I also include the Bible in my music. I let the words of the scripture be the hook. My solo album will be released in 2022.

I also assist others musically with encountering God through song. I provide training and workshops tailored to their needs.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
God for the gift, ability, assignment, energy, love of music, and the force to keep going. My husband is my biggest supporter. He is always in the back of my head and in my face saying don’t quit… Finish. My oldest daughter, Mauricia is a major supporter and help.

My assistant Tammie Davis who is my honest and straightforward friend. She is always in the wings watching and protecting not just me but my family. Eric Ashby and Family – not enough words. Angela Morehead, the Psalmist, taught me the power of my voice. She also taught me how to hear music, voices and how to execute during Praise and Worship.

Dewayne Holmes and Paul Simms – both Ministers of Music I have worked with. Willa Mae Manning- my grandmother. Melvin Manning- my father. Meta Wells and Norma J Moore- my mother and grandmother. My Pastor and First Lady- Steve and Donna Houpe
