Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Smith.
Hi Casey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Helping people is something I’ve always enjoyed, even from a young age. Combined with my interest in science, it naturally led me to nursing.
While I was in nursing school, I began noticing that some of my classmates were struggling to understand certain concepts, even with instruction from our professors. I started tutoring my classmates, and I quickly realized they couldn’t be the only nursing students struggling to make sense of these complex topics. That’s when I decided to take what I was already doing in person and bring it to social media.
I started sharing videos breaking down difficult nursing concepts in a simple, easy to understand way. After just a few videos, they began taking off. I realized there was a huge community of nursing students looking for information that felt less overwhelming and more approachable. What started as helping a few classmates eventually grew into a platform where I could help thousands of aspiring nurses.
Today, I work in the Cardiac ICU, where I care for critically ill patients during twelve hour shifts. During those twelve hours, I become more than just their nurse. I’m often the first person to recognize when something “just doesn’t feel right,” the person advocating for my patient when they can’t advocate for themselves, and sometimes the person providing encouragement and reassurance during some of the hardest moments of their lives.
My content has grown with me throughout my nursing journey. I now share not only nursing school tips and simplified concepts, but also bedside nursing skills, critical care knowledge, and the realities of growing into my career as a nurse. In many ways, I’m still doing what I started doing in nursing school: taking something that feels complicated or overwhelming and helping someone understand it a little better.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has been anything but a smooth road. Nursing is actually my second degree. While pursuing my first degree in biology, I went through one of the darkest periods of my life. I struggled with my mental health, and that struggle eventually affected me academically. I failed several classes and found myself in a place where I was struggling both personally and academically.
Being readmitted to my university and finishing my first degree required me to fight harder than I ever had before. That experience taught me an important lesson. Success doesn’t always come easily, and sometimes the biggest obstacles in your life can become the experiences that shape you the most.
After I was readmitted to school, my advisor told me that they didn’t think I would get into nursing school. At the time, hearing that was like a slap in the face. Being told that I wasn’t capable was a hard thing to hear, but ultimately, it became the fire I didn’t know I needed. I wanted to prove them wrong, but more importantly, I wanted to prove to myself that I was capable.
I went on to not only get into nursing school, but graduate with a 4.0 GPA and finish second in my class.
Looking back, I’m grateful that my journey wasn’t easy. Those setbacks taught me resilience, perseverance, and the importance of believing in yourself, even when someone else doesn’t believe in you yet.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Away from the bedside, you can usually find me on TikTok and YouTube, where I share content centered around nursing education, career development, and the real life experiences of being a nurse. My mission is to educate and inspire future and current nurses.
Nursing can be an emotionally heavy profession, so I try to bring an upbeat and encouraging perspective to my content while still being honest about the realities of the job. I want my audience to see both the rewarding moments and the challenges that come with nursing. I’m not afraid to share the highs and lows of my own journey because I believe authenticity creates connection.
What I’m most proud of is the community I’ve built. Across my platforms, I’ve grown a community of more than 62,000 nurses and aspiring nurses who come together to learn, ask questions, and encourage one another. I’ve had the privilege of connecting with nurses and nursing students across the country and even internationally, which is something I never could have imagined when I first started creating content.
I think what sets me apart is my willingness to be vulnerable. I share not only my accomplishments, but also the moments when I’ve struggled, made mistakes, felt overwhelmed, or questioned myself. By being open about my own experiences, I’ve created a space where others feel comfortable doing the same. Some of my favorite conversations have come from people sharing their own stories with me and realizing they aren’t alone.
At the end of the day, I don’t feel like I have followers, I feel like I have a community of friends. That community is what motivates me to continue creating and reminds me why I started in the first place.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Rather than one specific memory, what stands out most to me from my childhood is how consistently my parents supported me. I was involved in a lot growing up, and I can remember them being there for every track meet, cross-country meet, and basketball game.
At the time, I didn’t fully understand the amount of time, effort, and love that went into showing up for me over and over again. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to appreciate those moments so much more. Looking back, I realize that their constant support gave me a sense of confidence and taught me the importance of showing up for the people you love.
I think that is one of the greatest gifts my parents gave me, and it’s something I’ll always be grateful for.
