Conversations with Candice Maberry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Maberry.

Hi Candice, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The metaphysical and the unknown have always fascinated me since childhood. Due to my religious upbringing, I could only catch glimpses of Tarot in movies and books. This gravitational pull grew as I entered adulthood and increased substantially once I obtained my first Tarot deck.

It felt so natural to decipher the message in the cards before me. After much practice and a large dose of encouragement from my friends, I brought my “party trick” to the public with readings in the Westbottoms. The response was so welcoming. Being able to connect with people, to bring them a new perspective on their situation, or even just someone to talk to about their struggle for five minutes felt so cathartic.

Lady MOG became my nickname after so many conversations about my cat Ghost. I joked that it was like he was my child and I was Mother of Ghost (MOG). After a few weekends in the Westbottoms and my newly minted nickname had been established, I knew it was time to expand and offer readings to other parts of Kansas City.

I’ve developed great relationships with the vendors I work with regularly. Their openness to adding a little mystical entertainment to their venue has helped build the business that I have now.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The general reception to the readings has been quite positive. Every once in a while there’s someone that will voice their disapproval of the practice of Tarot or claim that what I’m doing is Satanic. That’s their own healing journey to deal with and reflect upon.

When I first started reaching out to vendors, there was a lot of rejection or lack of response. Being vulnerable and putting yourself out there is just part of any business, so even though the path forward hasn’t been smooth it has helped me build my communication skills.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I provide messages from the Universe through the use of Tarot Cards. My specialty is in public and private events, adding a little mystical entertainment to any occasion. I’m known for laughing and crying with my patrons.

I’m most proud of the clients I can encourage to do the “crazy thing” or encourage to take a leap of faith with something they’ve always wanted to do.

I am one of many amazing Tarot readers in Kansas City and the connections I’ve built with the local Tarot community has been so lovely. Each reader is so unique, so it’s hard to say what sets us apart from each other. Perhaps the amount of extras I have on the table for anyone getting a reading (candy, stickers, and a small rock or key to remember your message.)

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Going to visit my Great-Grandmother (Nana) down in Oklahoma during the summer. Making cookies with her and just talking for hours. She loved to gossip about nothing in particular. I think that piece of her is with me in Tarot. Listening to everyone’s story, if only for a moment.
