Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Bacon.
Hi Brittany, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
The creative side of me has loved photography for years. The logical side became a nurse, wife, and mother to 3 (now 4), beautiful girls, first. After the birth of my 3rd girl, my soul searching led me to believe I could (and should) pursue my professional photography dreams. Being a labor nurse has had me involved in some of the most important and memorable moments of people’s lives. Countless times I’ve thought “if I could freeze this moment, I would.” Now, with photography, I can.
I took a photography course in high school and have slowly been adding to that education for almost 15 (ouch!) years. I was ALWAYS taking pictures, whether I thought I was the model in front of the camera or the creative making my friends get dressed up and then taking their pictures on my disposable camera or polaroid. I even took my very pregnant friend’s maternity pictures the day before she had her baby girl. But it never dawned on me I could pursue my photography love as a business until I had my 3rd baby girl. I had paid photographers to take my first 2 daughters’ pictures and wanted to give it a whirl. From that moment on, I was hooked. Newborns and pregnant moms are where I was able to combine my 2 passions of photography and being a labor nurse together. And last year after the birth of our 4th daughter, I quit my job as a labor RN to become a stay-at-home mom. Around this time my photography side business was EXPLODING. I like to think it was God telling me I was doing the right thing by staying home and that I would still have this other love of mine close by. I never dreamed my love of taking pictures would turn into a successful business where I can set my own schedule, take on clients I love, and allow me to never miss another holiday or milestone of my own babies.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Let’s just say I have learned A LOT over the years. The biggest lesson to me was to finally hone my skills into sessions that my soul loved doing. I knew if I wanted to keep growing in this business, I couldn’t be amazing at every type of session out there. I chose maternity/newborn/family photography for that reason. Learning to say NO has also been a huge struggle for me. I am a natural-born people pleaser and really want all my clients to get what they want. But I also learned if you want to be taken seriously in the business of photography, that includes having a style and saying no to certain sessions that won’t fit it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in maternity/newborn/family photography- both studio lighting and natural light. I would say I am most known for my newborn images and maybe my birth images when I was able to offer those.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
To say NO! To stay happy in this business, you have to learn that important lesson along the way. And to charge what you are worth, otherwise, you’ll spend hours in a session, do the math and realize you’ve been paid about 60 cents an hour. OUCH!
