Conversations with Annie Lui

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Lui.

Hi Annie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always loved photography, but it wasn’t until when I started working for my university’s newspaper that I started photographing people. From there, it all spiraled uphill (that’s a phrase, right?!). My college studies were completely irrelevant to photography, and I never imagined photography becoming such a huge part of my life. I owe a lot of my success to my friends who were my “guinea pigs” when I first started my business in Texas, and all those who continued supporting me as I established my business as an industry professional.

Not going to lie, it took a lot of time and hard work to get to where I am today (and doing all over again now that I’m in KC!), but every bit of effort is worth it and I’m truly blessed to have incredible couples and families whom I get to serve. To date, I have photographed tens of hundreds of people, capturing their love, laughter, tears, and all the moments in between. Now that I have moved to KC, I cannot wait to explore a whole new market and meet more incredible people here!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a small business owner, no matter what kind of business is never easy. So many people believe that to have a photography business, all you need is amazing photos. I was one of those people, and reality hit me like a truck. Marketing, accounting, bookkeeping, designing a website, create a brand.

So many things happen behind the scene to make a business work so that I get to do what I love – photographing people. Not only so, having just moved to a brand new city, I’m having to do most of these again to get myself re-established.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Annie Lui Photography specialized in natural light weddings and couples photography. My style is bright, airy, and romantic; something that will stand the test of time as you look back at your photos 50 years from now. One thing I love to brag about my business is the fact that I created my editing style from scratch and I hand edit each and every photo (yes, including the 800 photos in a wedding gallery).

I strive to deliver an experience; I love meeting up with my couples and clients and getting to know them, shower them with gifts, and be their best friend on the day of the wedding/session whether it be helping them carry things, fluffing dresses etc.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I’ve had SO many people that came along on my journey to scale my business what it is today. I love all of my clients dearly, and I’m thankful for the trust they put in me. I’ve had the honor to be a part of many incredible wedding vendor communities and learn from them.

Being an introvert, I never would’ve imagined being able to make all the meaningful connections I have – so many of them have supported and encouraged me through tough times. I seriously would not have gone this far without them!!
