Conversations with Angela D’Souza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela D’Souza.

Hi Angela , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have a background in interior design, and spemt 10+ years at home raising four boys. When my youngest entered kindergarten in 2020, I began taking on small jobs doing decorative door finishes and small art commissions.

My business grew quickly, as various potential customers asked if I would tackle different projects, some of them stretching my creativity and encouraging me to teach myself new styles and techniques. Some of the projects, I had never done before, but I knew that I could figure it out.

I’ll always be very grateful to those customers who hired me that first year, 2020, as they took a chance on me. I didn’t have a portfolio yet, but they gave me a chance. I still work with several of these wonderful customers frequently, even five years (and may projects) later.

I now handle a wide variety of projects. I paint kitchen cabinets, faux wall finishes, faux wood garage doors and front doors, limewash brick and stone, canvas art commissions, furniture makeovers, and more.

I love new challenges. I’ve had a few tossed at me, “paint magic” projects where I had to disguise something, fix something, or provide a quick turnaround for something on a deadline. I love it!

I also love the wonderful people I’ve met along the way. I’ve interacted with so many wonderful humans, I’ve heard a lot of stories and developed real friendships.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been very smooth, to be honest. I feel like God had it planned out all along. I didn’t have a clear vision for where I was going when I started in 2020, but I went with the flow and it took me along a beautiful and exciting path I could not have imagined if I was to dream up a career for myself.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I offer a full service decorative painting and refinishing business. I think what sets me a part is that I offer such a wide variety of services.

I do think that the more specialized service that I provide is faux finishes. I make things look like wood, metal, stone, etc.

A big part of my job is the practical side of things, helping spaces feel more cohesive, and helping make my customers home fit their vision. This includes a lot of lime wash of brick and stone, and lots of kitchen cabinet painting.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
The best thing about our city is the wonderful people that I’ve met. I’ve done a lot of work in Missouri in Kansas, and I’ve just really felt very blessed with the interactions I’ve had and the friendships that I’ve made along the way. It was an unexpected bonus that I never would’ve anticipated.
The Midwest is full of people who are kind, thoughtful, down to earth, open, and honest.
My least favorite part of our city is the humidity in the summer, and January and February’s bitter cold!
