Conversations with Amy Gray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Gray.

Hi Amy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always needed to work with my hands. Whether baking, sewing, or quilting, I’ve found that creativity is an essential outlet for me. My journey into painting began when I saw artwork that moved me and thought, I could do that. What started as an experiment quickly became a passion, something I felt compelled to pursue.
I enjoy exploring different mediums, but my current focus is on acrylic paint and resin. My years as an international flight attendant allowed me to experience diverse cultures and landscapes, many of which influence my work today. I hold a particular fondness for the Flint Hills, Cape Cod, and Ireland—places that often find their way into my palette and compositions. At times, though, I’m guided simply by color itself and the emotion it evokes.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been completely smooth, being self taught means figuring out techniques, materials and my own style through trial and error. Learning to work with resin and balance color takes time, but each challenge helps me grow and shapes the work I create today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create geometric acrylic paintings on wood panels finished with glossy resin. People often tell me they’ve never seen anything like my pieces. They have a clean and vibrant look.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My biggest advice is just to start, don’t wait for the “right” time or feel like you need to know everything. I’m still learning myself and often feel like I”m just at the beginning of the journey. There are so many more things I want to learn about. Experiment, make mistakes, utilize YouTube! Each piece teaches you something and over time you’ll discover your own style.
