Today we’d like to introduce you to Torey Berndt.
Hi Torey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My work has ranged from nonprofit marketing and communications and now, small business support and advocacy. I’m a community creator, educator, and author.
This path has been forged through blooming where I’m planted, intentionally looking for the lesson, and staying curious.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
By the time I was 31,. I had hit my 5-year career goal in less than one year. I was a Director of Marketing and Communications at one of my favorite nonprofits, I had a thriving business, was in a long-term committed relationship, and had just joined a board of directors.
18 months later, I left that job, with my world and confidence shattered. My best friend died in December 2022, my faith fell apart, then my father-in-law died in December 2023. I’d almost been asked to leave that board. Thankfully, my relationship survived, but it wasn’t easy.
I hit burnout hard, and it was time to make a change. Through intentional self-care, mental healthcare, advocacy, education, self-awareness, alignment, structure, and celebration, I’m living my absolute best life.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Kansas City loves Kansas City more than anywhere else in the world, I’ll swear by it. Our community pride is palpable, and it makes me so proud to be a Kansas Citian. I’ve lived in KC longer than I’ve lived anywhere in my life (and KC is location number 9 in 36 years). I love feeling like I’m home everywhere I go, and I’m not gonna lie, my entire wardrobe consists of Kansas City shirts, necklaces and earrings.
