Today we’d like to introduce you to Solo Patterson.
Hi Solo, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story starts in August 2018 when I decided to leave my corporate job as an Account Manager for Pandora Radio and become a full-time Personal Trainer at Equinox in Dallas, TX.
Prior to this transition I was competing in Men’s Physique competitions which was my only background in strength training with the exception of High School sports. Equinox taught me the essentials and fundamentals of what it takes to be a successful health coach and operate a personal training business.
My tenure at Equinox lasted about 18 months before COVID-19 hit and the gym closed for the foreseeable future. Little did I know this would be a blessing in disguise for the trajectory of my business.
During this time I was introduced to the Functional Range Systems (FRS). Due to excessive sitting coupled with years of overtraining I had been dealing with chronic low back pain for quite awhile, and had accepted this was going to be my fate. The initial FRS course introduced me to the world of isometrics and after a 12-week experiment, my low back pain had substantially subsided and my strength had increased even though I hadn’t touched a weight in 3 months.
I knew then that if applied correctly this type of training could benefit people on many different levels.
After finding success with myself and clients alike I dove extremely deep into the internal strength training system and have since made it my niche. The training I do specifically targets joint and connective tissue architecture in order to increase active mobility. This overtime enhances physical performance, lowers chance of injury (especially in non-contact situations) and extends of the overall quality of one’s life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve learned that the fitness industry has the highest rate of turnover so it definitely has not been an easy road. When you’re trading time for money, consistency is the deciding factor to ensure you’re able to make a living.
Building a book of clientele you can depend on to show up at a premium price is never an easy task. But if you do it with the right intention behind your actions it will be very rewarding.
I was blessed in Dallas to have a corporate training setup where I was guaranteed 15-20 sessions per week not including the clients I was already training independently. This made the consistency piece of my business.
My wife and I recently moved to Kansas City in October of 2023 to be closer to family in order to raise our son. This transition has proven to be the biggest hurdle thus far. Leaving a thriving business in a consumer heavy market to a more easy going, family oriented city has proven its pros and cons.
The building process has been slow but efficient, diligently working daily to introduce others to a different approach to strength training without the network and resources I had previously built in Dallas.
I’m constantly reminded by wife to “trust the process” as when you’re trying to build something original and genuine obstacles are the only way to grow. I’m very grateful for the connections I’ve built in the city and eager to continue building quality relationships through my practice and outreach.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Solo P Fitness is rooted on the belief that true strength is more than muscle and is built from the inside out. By prioritizing joint health, connective tissue resilience and improving daily movement habits, you can build the best moving version of yourself no matter your age or experience. I specialize in mobility and internal strength training, using principles from Functional Range Conditioning (FRC), Kinstretch, and DBC Biomechanics for Human Performance to help people move, feel, and perform at their best for the long-term.
What sets Solo P Fitness apart is the focus on education and longevity. Instead of just chasing aesthetic goals or heavier lifts, clients learn why they’re training, how our bodies are designed to move, all while building awareness, control, and resilience that translates to everyday life and sport.
I’m most proud that the brand has grown through genuine relationships and results. Every person who trains with me feels the difference in how they move and live, which I imagine is why they keep coming back.
I offer 1:1 and semi-private personal training, Small Group Kinstretch, and online programs designed to improve joint health, strength, and long-term performance. At its core, the brand’s mission is to help people build stronger, more capable bodies that support the type of lifestyle they want to live .
How do you think about happiness?
Happiness for me is knowing that I’m able to live my passion everyday and call it work. When a client tells me they did their CARs while waiting in the checkout line, or they haven’t thought about specific nagging pain in weeks is a huge win in my book. It shows that all the work we’ve been doing is starting to stick and they’re prioritizing themselves outside of our sessions.
Also getting to experience a new restaurant for the first time with the family has to go on top of the list, especially when it’s a KC Craft Ramen Pop-Up!
