Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Helt.
Hi Shawn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My Grandfather started growing sod in 1963.
He retired in 1971. My Father started into the sod farm business the same year my grandfather father retired. I grew up working on the small family sod farm and then joined my father after graduation. Now my mother, son Slater, my wife and I run the farm.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of our struggles have been a sluggish economy and slow home sales. A lot of our customer base is new home construction.

Helt’s Turf Farms is a family owned and operated full service sod farm . We grow thin blade turf type Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass and several varieties of licensed hybrid Bermuda Grass. HTF also grows corn, soybeans, wheat and alfalfa. HTF does commercial,residential,sports field and golf courses sodding and sprigging work. We also offer wholesale and retail sod sales out of our office in rural Pleasant Hill,Mo
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
To be courteous and do the best you can do. HTF and their employees have a keen eye for detail nice clean trucks and equipment with nice appearing and courteous crews
