Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Wolters.
Hi Sarah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Ever since I was 5, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I declared my major freshman year of college and never looked back. I graduated with a teaching license for elementary and special education and took my first job in St. Louis. What I didn’t see coming was what I call my “quarter life crisis” – the realization that I wasn’t going to be a teacher forever and I needed to find my new fit. As much as I loved my students, I found that what I wanted to prioritize with my class, relationship building, social and emotional skills, leadership and character development weren’t the focus of the schools I worked in since they weren’t the material that was going to be tested. I started to figure out that my best fit might be within education but outside of the classroom. That led me to 5 years in youth development as a specialist for the University of Missouri Extension 4-H office. Once again, I was completely confident I had found my path and worked to expand the programming in Clay County to reach more youth and families. I was given the chance to lean into my passion for leadership and efforts that embraced diversity, equity and inclusion. I had the opportunity to be certified as a Qualified Administrator working with the Intercultural Development Inventory and implementing that work into my leadership programs with both youth and adults. The next time I found myself looking for another career was a choice based on what was best for my family. My husband and I wanted to start the adoption process and I knew my job in youth development wouldn’t allow me to be as present as I wanted to be as a mom. I took a leap and found myself in the world of consulting. In 2023, I started my own company primarily focused on consulting and facilitating professional development within education and inclusive leadership. Ironically, a month later, we had a newborn and I found myself figuring out entrepreneurship and mom life at the same time. In the last two years, I have found amazing clients in many different industries and have had the incredible opportunity to be home with my son two days a week. Following the impact of budget changes and federal orders around DEI programs in 2025, I realized that I needed something to help cover the financial gap between my previous income and what I was able to make now with Sarah Wolters Co. I quickly discovered another transition was in the works. While I have no intention of closing my first business, I find myself starting a second business with my family, one that can bring some stability by selling a product not affected by any of the recent changes or budget cuts in our country. Looking towards the next couple of months, I have the privilege of owning my own company allowing me to provide professional development about topics I am passionate about while also serving as the President of Swift Screening Solutions alongside my family offering background checks and pre employment screening services. So here I am, again, ready to embark on a new adventure with a toddler, two businesses and one long winding journey!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Leaving the classroom was one of the hardest things for me to do and process since being a teacher had been intertwined into my identity for so long. I wasn’t sure how to continue being a teacher without being in a classroom and I didn’t know how to not be a teacher. Each transition had its own struggles as I navigated new roles and expectations but processing my new identity with that first transition was certainly the hardest. Balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship has been a struggle in its own right, but one that has also continually brought me a community of support.
As you know, we’re big fans of Sarah Wolters Co. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At Sarah Wolters Co, I have three lanes of services, educational consulting and professional development, leadership consulting and professional development with or without an emphasis on DEI and agile project management. The majority of my business comes from the inclusive leadership professional development services incorporating the Intercultural Development Inventory. Recently, I have established two exciting new partnerships. I offer on demand webinars in the Culture and Human Diversity competency for CYC Source helping youth care professionals continue to skill up in their profession. I also created Biscuits game activity guides with standards based lesson plans to supplement the dice game already on the market by Glue Bunny Games. These guides empower teachers to utilize the game in their math class while also taking something off their plate by providing lesson plans and necessary student handouts. I think what sets me apart is my willingness and determination to tailor each program and each service to fit my client’s unique needs. While I have resources like the IDI I rely on in many programs, each training is created based on the clients objectives and preferences.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think my dedication to my work and my clients is what has continually allowed me to transition roles and find success. I have always considered myself a life long learner and that trait has given me the opportunity to continue to skill up in new areas and industries. It’s the skill that will allow me to embrace a new business in a new industry coupled with my desire to always serve my clients to the best of my ability.
