Community Highlights: Meet Sami Jenedi of KC Döner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sami Jenedi.

Hi Sami, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
KC Döner started with a pretty simple idea: I missed the taste of Turkish döner(thinly sliced, seasoned meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie and served in wraps or plates with fresh toppings), like the kind you get on the streets back home or in Europe. I couldn’t really find anything like that around here, so I figured, why not try making it myself?

At first, it was just a passion project, testing recipes, figuring out how to bring that flavor while still keeping it approachable for people here. From there, things started to grow. I started doing pop-ups and events, and people really connected with it, the flavors, the story, the vibe.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest challenges is that most people here don’t know what döner is, so getting them to try it takes some extra effort. On top of that, there were the usual small business hurdles, permits, equipment, long hours. But it’s all been worth it to introduce something new and see people come back for more.

We’ve been impressed with KC Döner, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
KC Döner brings bold, street-style Turkish-inspired flavors to Kansas City. We specialize in döner (thinly sliced, seasoned meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie) served in wraps, bowls, or plates with fresh toppings and house-made sauces.

What sets us apart is our focus on quality and flavor. We keep the menu simple and do it well. Some things are adapted to local tastes, but the spirit of the food is still there. Plus, we make fresh baklava every day, a sweet way to finish your meal.

I’m proud that we’ve created something unique for KC, a fresh, craveable option that stands out. Whether you’re new to döner or already a fan, we’ve got something you’ll enjoy.

Luck has played a positive role in our journey.

I believe luck favors the prepared. We work hard, stay focused, and keep learning, so when good luck comes our way, we’re ready to make the most of it. It’s been a mix of effort and a bit of good fortune, and that combination keeps things exciting!
