Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Mitchell.
Hi Sam, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My fitness journey started as a way to increase my performance as an athlete. I was a pretty skinny teenager and needed to put on some weight if I wanted to have a chance to play basketball in high school and beyond. I worked hard in the weight room and in the kitchen to do everything I could to make that dream a reality. This was the initial spark that grew into my passion for health and fitness.
After I finished college and was no longer spending long hours training on the basketball court and running sprints I transitioned to working a corporate IT job. My poor posture at my computer and the poor training program I built myself wreaked havoc on my body. I was in pain constantly and basically had to stop training altogether. My “workouts” consisted of sitting in the sauna at lunch and stretching. I was really struggling not being able to work out like I wanted to. I decided the best thing I could do was learn more about human mechanics and exercise science. I did a self-study personal training certification in my free time without knowing where it would lead me. A few months later I was offered a position to go back to school and work as a graduate assistant in the UMKC Athlete Strength and Conditioning department.
That was over 10 years ago. A couple of certifications, some weekend courses, and lots of hours of continuing education credits later and I’m happy to say I’m still passionate about health and fitness. After multiple positions at several local gyms, I found my way to Nexus Fit Co opened in 2017. Nexus had been opened in 2016 by friends of mine who were equally passionate about fitness. In 2022, after 5 years as a personal trainer and group fitness coach at Nexus, my wife and I bought the gym from the previous owners. Now as owner, I manage the facility while still being heavily involved with both personal training and coaching group classes.
My passion is helping others build confidence, feel better, and live fuller lives through exercise, strength training, and healthy habits.
My daughter and wife are the coolest people I know. When I’m not spending time with them my hobbies include cooking and eating, woodworking, reading, and watching sports or TV shows.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Covid hit the gym hard. Luckily we managed to survive the difficult time in no small part due to the leadership of the owners as well as the love and generosity of the community of Nexus members who stayed through the tough times.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Nexus is a coach led, personal training and group class fitness community. We offer a number of 1 on 1 training options for those looking to level up their fitness with a curated fitness program created and implemented with a certified trainer. Our group classes are 60 min, led by a certified trainer from start to finish. The programming is a mix of strength training and cardiovascular exercise and can be adjusted to individuals of all fitness levels.
Our ability to work with inexperienced lifters really sets us apart. We have several members who had no experience workout out before starting at Nexus. Our mission is to help people change their life. After spending time in our facility and with our team we want our members to walk out of the doors after a workout and feel like they are a stronger and happier version of themselves.
It isn’t the scientific sum of calories, workouts, and weight that keeps our members returning. It’s not cutting-edge equipment and technology. It’s the people that count.
Our knowledgeable staff cares about guiding and encouraging each and every member to obtain the goals they seek for themselves. We know many people don’t feel confident or capable in their own bodies. At Nexus Fit Co, we coach fitness so people can learn to love their bodies while becoming stronger, happier and confident in their own skin.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Action is better than inaction 100% of the time. All to often we fall prey to the need for something to be perfect before implementing. This can paralyze you from starting. You can figure things out along the way, it doesn’t have to be perfect to take the first step.
