Community Highlights: Meet Nicole Becker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Becker.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve known I wanted to work in communications ever since I was in high school. I thought that path would lead me to journalism because that was my first exposure to sharing stories with the world. I discovered Public Relations during my time at the University of Central Missouri (they have a fantastic PR program that prepares you for working in the field – something not a lot of people can say about their college major!), and I fell in love with the field. Being able to help people shape and share the stories coming from the heart of their “why” has been a driving factor in my career.

After working in a few different communications jobs after college, I moved from my hometown of Jefferson City to Kansas City to work at a public relations agency – a dream that I have had since I first knew I wanted to work in PR.

During that time, I was given a fantastic opportunity to work with nationally recognized brands. I was securing media placements in publications I actually read and on news shows I actually watched – the rush that I get from making this happen for my clients still never gets old!

I realized that I wanted to continue my work in public relations, but something was pulling me to do more – to make a difference with my skills and career. I left the agency I was at to work at a local education non-profit. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was able to work from home, which left me with a lot of free time and not a lot of places to go.

Starting my public relations agency was a dream always floating around in my head, and I decided to make it a reality. I juggled starting Nicole K Becker Public Relations (NKBPR) with a full-time job for a while – working nights and weekends to make it all happen. When I transitioned to my full-time job being at NKBPR, I knew that I had made my dream a reality. Now, I can work with clients that I believe in and help them grow their brand or business through purposeful communications with audiences that will drive results and impact.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting my own business has been such a rewarding but demanding challenge. Juggling two jobs until I could justify running NKBPR full-time was probably one of the more difficult. Feeling like my business had to take a backseat or waiting to do the work during the evenings and on weekends was difficult because it was the work I wanted to be doing the most.

I feel like I’ve used the phrase “well, it was a good lesson to learn” more times than I have in my entire life since I started NKBPR. I keep wondering when I will learn all of these “lessons,” and I am slowly figuring out that I don’t think I will ever be done learning because I won’t ever stop growing and trying to make myself and my business better. I keep telling my husband I should write a book for future entrepreneurs about what I’ve learned – but if they’re anything like me – they’re stubborn and will have to figure everything out for themselves!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Nicole Becker Public Relations is a boutique public relations agency that focuses on elevating brands through meaningful communications. I believe that everyone has a story to tell and our focus is helping you discover that story and share it with the correct audiences to further your mission and reach your goals.

Everything that a brand does is sending a message – even if you’re not doing anything at all. We want to help you take control of that message and shape it in a way that will help you foster and flourish relationships with your intended audiences. We work with brands that we believe in, with people who are doers and risk-takers and are ready to elevate their presence. We offer public relations and digital media services. We work with our clients to build tailored communications solutions that drive real results.
