Community Highlights: Meet Nathan Nowak of Wyco Wood Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Nowak.

Hi Nathan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I’m a Firefighter by trade. I was looking for a hobby to pursue on my days off from the Fire Station. In about 2018 I came across some logs that were going to be turned into firewood and decided I wanted to turn them into live edge slabs to make tables. I reached out to a local Sawyer, Tom Hoggard, and he sparked my interest in Saw Milling.

I discovered that there was a local need for Saw Milling services and especially a mobile aspect. My father and I purchased an Alaskan Chain Saw Mill in 2018. We’ve learned so much about the process over the last few years. We currently run a Lucas and a Timber King Saw Mill.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The most difficult aspect of our business is getting the word out to the community that our service exists and that they have options when it comes to log repurposing.

We’ve been impressed with Wyco Wood Company, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
-Mobile Saw Milling.
-Custom pieces that can be difficult to find elsewhere.
-Log removal.
-Partner with tree services to either repurpose or remove unwanted logs.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Wyandotte County. I’m a second-generation Kansas City KS Firefighter. Out of high school, I joined the Air National Guard and spent nine years as a Reservist. In 2017 I decided to become an Officer in the Coast Guard as a Reservist.
