Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Roelofsz.
Hi Mary, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my farm in 2003, as a single parent with twin daughters. my farm included a broken down house and 13 acres. I worked as a store manager at ,Quik Trip for 32 years, sacrificed and saved enough money to build a magnificent barn, purchase the surrounding 31 acres, fencing it all for goats, and. building up my gypsy vanner and noriker horse herds, as well as my Nigerian dwarf goat herd. I sell goat kids, milk my goats twice a day, and sell baby kune kune pigs, turkeys, and horses. I currently work at National Archives and Records Administration full time too. I get up at 1:30 AM to milk 22 goats and feed about 25 bottle baby goats that were just born and are available for sale. my farm and my daughters and grandchildren are my whole life. I started showing my goats this year and did well. I am always learning something new. this endeavor has kept my life vibrant and satisfying, and I have made many good friends doing it. I have 3 very exciting horse foals for next year, there is always so much to look forward to.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
when I moved to my farm my daughters were 11. I struggled financially for the first ten years., living paycheck to paycheck and getting food from food pantry to keep up. Trying to keep my propane tank full and all the bills paid was a constant stress and struggle.my 401,k was my saving graces.I contributed 6% for 32 years. without that I never could have accomplished what I did.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
