Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucas Wright.
Hi Lucas, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started booking punk and ska shows in 1996 in my hometown of North Platte, NE, when I was just a teenager. There was no social media back then, so I relied on a website called BYOFL.org to connect with bands. After high school, I moved to Kearney, NE, to attend college at the University of Nebraska, Kearney, and booked bands at local bars and nightclubs there. After college, my wife and I moved to Omaha in 2008, where I’ve been booking shows since. In 2021, after live music started again, I expanded the markets where I book shows and began doing shows in Des Moines, Sioux Falls, Lawrence, and Kansas City.
Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
There are always ups and downs in the world of a promoter. It’s hard to foresee all of the variables that come into place when booking a date for a show so far in advance: weather, competing events, van breakdowns, COVID! But through it all, I do it for my love of music and the bands I book.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in booking underground music in the Midwest. Punk, metal, hardcore, alternative, rockabilly, ska, etc., are the bands and genres I predominantly work with and am most known for. In addition, I adhere to the DIY ethos of punk. I’m very hands-on with show promotion, from designing poster artwork to promoting the “old school” way with handbills and fliers and helping run sound or doors at smaller DIY venues. This distinguishes me from larger production companies with numerous employees and big budgets. It’s a grassroots collective effort. Frequently, the shows I book wouldn’t be booked by other promoters in the area, so I’m proud to bring shows that I love and foster a scene in the cities where I book shows.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
While I keep very busy booking shows, I’m still a family man and have 3 boys who are very active in sports and their various activities.
