Community Highlights: Meet Linda Weiner of Sex Therapist St Louis, LLC and Sensate Focus Touch, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Weiner.

Hi Linda, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It began with my last name and the taunting that desensitized me to sexual terms. A second influence was the introduction of the pill and the Women’s Movement as I went off to college at 17 before the age of “incurable” sexually transmitted illnesses. In college I took a Human Sexuality course with a young professor who was a mentor and remains a colleague and friend.
I have always been interested in people and their struggles and decided that some form of counseling was going to be my career choice. As luck would have it, I discovered that Masters & Johnson who are the founders of modern sex therapy were here in St Louis. What the heck! I applied and was accepted into their 6 month training program in sex therapy, following which I was hired and worked there for five years before starting my private practice here.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has not always been smooth. The biggest obstacle I had to overcome was the fear of failure when taking the leap to private practice.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sex Therapist St Louis, LLC and Sensate Focus Touch, LLC?
For many years I was a solo practitioner providing sex and relationship counseling to individuals and couples. Once our child was raised, I began publishing on my specialty, sensate focus touch which is a series of structured touching exercises that form the basis of modern sex therapy. Later followed my second venture, www.sensatefocustouch.com, a website dedicated to teaching professionals about sensate focus touch.

I am most proud that I have been lucky enough to find a career that incorporates my interest and skill in working to help others with their intimate lives and have found a way to reach a broader audience of sexual health and sexual medicine professionals to teach them about this powerful technique.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was always curious about people and their lives and read many books about cultures with which I was unfamiliar. I was an outgoing kid who made friends in many different social groups at school. I was definitely not the best student until I found sociology, anthropology, and psychology and then graduated Cum Laude!
