Community Highlights: Meet Kori Hintz-Bohn of Renew Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kori Hintz-Bohn.

Hi Kori, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Feeling called to be a counselor became clear in college after receiving counseling myself for anxiety, depression, and an eating disorder. Several years after therapy, I noticed and was honored to have individuals come to me with their struggles and allow me to walk beside them.

After grad school, I worked in a private practice setting for 6 years. Then, in 2005 with the help of 8 amazing friends Renew Counseling was born. My friends helped with all the business aspects to get Renew off the ground including furniture, website design, banking set up, branding, legal documents – you name it saving me thousands of dollars so I could put my focus on building a great team to inspire and restore wholeness to the brokenhearted.

Today, we have therapists and dietitians who help with a variety of issues on an individual outpatient weekly basis including adolescents, adults, anxiety, relationship issues, eating disorder issues, mood disorders, depression and parenting.

In 2017 The Anxiety Center at Renew was created to help adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, panic attacks, phobias, OCD and PTSD through a six-week Intensive Outpatient Program. In 2018, my husband, Jason joined me at Renew to help adolescents with anxiety, depression, and school refusal. He has helped so many families who felt they had lost their young person.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Owning my own business has been a bumpy ride.

There were many growing pains and at a time I wondered if I should close Renew’s doors as running a small business is very challenging. I am so glad I did not! For 16 years now, our amazing staff has pursued excellence in their client care and has provided outreach to our community which shows by the waitlist we have.

In 2010, Renew opened its first Intensive Outpatient Program and we are thrilled to provide two levels of outpatient care. The opportunity to see the positive changes in clients lives over a few months versus years has been so rewarding to see! I love Renew and the staff who choose to call this place home. With anxiety at an all-time high as individuals struggle with the pandemic, I am glad we can offer help and hope to those who are suffering.

As you know, we’re big fans of Renew Counseling. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Anxiety Center at Renew offers an 18 session program when once a week counseling is not enough. For 6 weeks, one joins on M, T, Th from 5:30-8:30 pm and get’s to learn tools in a group format that can decrease unwanted symptoms and helps a person live the life they are meant to live. Both programs are covered by most major insurance companies. We all have suffered, but we do not have to be controlled by it. We can build resilience and learn the direction we want to take through our values.

The adolescent program works with both the young person and the parents to promote lasting change. The program is 20 sessions over a 5 week period of time, M, T, W, TH 2:00-5:00 pm. We work with all schools throughout the Kansas City area that are very supportive to help young people heal and have a purpose in their lives.

What matters most to you?
Renew desires to restore and inspire wholeness to the brokenhearted. When one walks through our doors I see their brokenness due to so many hurtful things that have happened on their journey. I see hopelessness as one has tried everything they know how to get control over their anxiety and are desperate for help.

But do you know what else I see? I see hope. I see the hope of tools that have empirical evidence to help one heal from anxiety and related disorders in the anxiety program. I see clinicians who are highly trained and want to be a part of one’s journey and healing.

Hope is the anchor for the soul.
