Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Beaver.
Hi Kelsey, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m Kelsey Beaver—a veteran, wife, momma of two boys, and founder of sensory dough co. I’ve had sensory struggles most of my life, but when my son began facing similar challenges, it pushed me into action. What started as a way to support him quickly turned into a calling to support others like us.
I began creating tools at my kitchen table—mixing dough, curating textures, testing everything with my son at my side. I didn’t have a business plan—I had a mission. And that mission has now grown into a thriving small business that brings calm, confidence, and creativity to families, classrooms, and therapy spaces all across Missouri and beyond.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—but it’s been a meaningful one.
I launched sensory dough co. in the middle of healing myself. As a disabled veteran, a mother to a sensory child, and someone who has battled sensory overload and anxiety most of my life, I was building a business out of necessity—not luxury.
I didn’t have funding. I didn’t have a team. I had my kitchen counter, my hands, and a mission to help my son feel seen. From burnout to breakdowns, from hacked social accounts to retail partnerships gone wrong, I’ve faced every kind of obstacle as a small business owner. I’ve lost money, sleep, and sometimes hope—but never the heart.
There were seasons I was running on fumes—balancing motherhood, survival, and entrepreneurship with nothing but duct tape and grit. But those same struggles built the kind of resilience you can’t fake.
Every challenge taught me something. I’ve learned how to protect my peace, stand up for my worth, and move with purpose even when it’s hard. And now? That messy road has led to a mission-driven brand that’s creating real impact in the sensory space.
As you know, we’re big fans of sensory dough co. . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
sensory dough co. is a handmade and handpicked sensory brand created to support emotional regulation, spark creativity, and make play feel purposeful. We offer a wide variety of sensory tools—including calming playdough, textured fluff, themed kits, I SPY bottles, calming bottles, birthday jars, subscription boxes, and more. Some are crafted by hand, others are carefully selected and tested—but everything is built around intention and inclusion.
We specialize in sensory experiences that are fun, functional, and visually soothing. No loud colors. No cookie-cutter designs. Our brand is built to support both kids and adults—from neurodivergent families to therapists, teachers, and everyday parents trying to help their kids feel seen and supported.
What sets us apart? We live this. I’m a sensory adult and a mom to a sensory child. We test everything before it ever reaches a customer. I know firsthand how powerful a single sensory tool can be—and I pour that understanding into every product we create or curate.
What I’m most proud of is the community we’ve built. Our products help people self-regulate, feel included, and connect through play. But more than that, our brand gives families permission to embrace their differences—and that’s something you can’t put a price on.
At sensory dough co., we believe sensory tools should feel as good to look at as they do to touch—and we’re proud to bring calm, connection, and creativity into the hands of those who need it most.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, success isn’t about numbers—it’s about impact.
It’s the mom who messages me crying because her child finally found a sensory tool that works. It’s the child who lights up when they open one of our kits and feels seen. It’s watching my boys know that their mom built something from nothing—out of love, grit, and purpose.
Success is waking up every day and knowing that what I’m doing matters. That I’ve taken my struggles and turned them into tools that help others feel calm, confident, and connected. It’s not always pretty or easy, but it’s real. And that’s enough.
I define success by the lives we touch, the smiles we spark, and the sensory safe spaces we create along the way. Everything else is just a bonus.
