Community Highlights: Meet Jordahn Hullaby of Edit Hair CO LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordahn Hullaby.

Hi Jordahn , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always wanted to run a business. I would sit daydreaming of the day I would make that a reality. Once I went off to college at Kansas State University, I knew I was suppose to be at the school of business. While in Manhattan, KS I learned to love my natural talent of math and my genuine curiosity of business, that is how I decided to study finance.

Fast forward to March 2024 my partners, Jazmyne Williams and Bex Kincaid, felt like it was time to venture out of their booth rental salon. It has always been a dream of Bex’s to run her own salon and Jazmyne knew she was down for the ride. They began their search for a salon to purchase in the Kansas City area. As I heard about their venture, I suggested I join as a third partner. I have business experience and a business degree, I could be the financial and business strategist to drive and maintain the business function, while my partners focused on day-to-day operations.

When the opportunity presented itself to purchase the assets of a hair salon with my two partners, Jazmyne Williams and Bex Kincaid, it felt like fate. The three of us met together and sat with the previous owners. Once we left our third official meeting, we knew THIS was the business for us and simultaneously all agreed that we were all in.

Ever since we closed on the purchase though, we have had our fair share of hurdles. Within two month of taking over we had to find a new location of the salon, create a full buildout, and move to the new salon space, all while maintaining the current operations at the current location. If anyone has done a buildout before, you know to plan for delays. We didn’t know that, so we had to move and setup the salon all within 24 hours. Once we were officially moved into the new location we dealt with massive flooding issues, equipment delays, unexpected expenses and ultimately a salon walk out (when the staff all walks out together). The first couple of months we all had this feeling of “what did we get ourselves into?” As the months went on it truly became easier. We learned how to be better owners, managers and grow into the new roles we were in.

Over the last year and a half we have focused on developing our client experience, cultivating our teams talent and creating processes and systems to move us forward. I can safely say we have moved from the surviving stage to the growth stage. It is a testament to our dedication, grit, and perseverance. All the late night conversations, trial and errors, and disagreements became the most beautiful part of our story.

Now that we have made it to the growth stage of business, we are now focused on what we want to be known for. The one word that always comes to mind is confidence. Our team is passionate about making our guests feel their best. That is what Edit Hair Co is set out to do. To make each guest their most confident and beautiful self.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth ride. We’ve dealt with unexpected issues at the beginning. We had to move the salon from one location to another, that required a full buildout and the turnaround needed to be within a month. The first week of moving into the new salon we had massive flooding issues, that we couldn’t get under control. Our neighbors and our salon space flooded for about a week or two straight before there was a solution.

Jazmyne, Bex and I learned how to be business owners, and managers all at the same time. We learned how to maintain healthy relationships with our staff and what it means to be owner operators. There are plenty of situations we would have handled differently now looking back. We have learned how to hire, fire, train and develop our employees in a way that fit our culture. I understand that we are in a position to truly impact our employees and their families lives and we want to do it well. I regularly remind my team all of the time, we must show ourselves grace. We are doing this for the first time we are bound to make mistakes, and the biggest lesson is that we keep showing up and keep trying.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Edit Hair CO LLC?
Edit Hair Co LLC is a hair salon in Blue Springs, MO right off of HWY 7. What our guest say about the salon is “That the atmosphere is fun”, they “love how collaborative and playful we are with each other”, and they overall “enjoy coming in”.

Edit Hair Co LLC offers a multitude of services like blonding, grey blending, highlights, lived-in and vivid colors, extensions, and haircuts.

What sets us apart is how collaborative our stylists are. This ensures we make the best experience for our guest. At times our stylists will ask each other how they would achieve a certain look the client is wanting and that process usually lends the best results for us.

We are most proud of the passion our team has for making people feel beautiful and bringing the confidence back.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I would definitely say I am a risk taker. One of the first lessons I learned in business school is “The greater the risk the greater the reward.” It has stuck with me all this time. The first major risk I have taken was buying the salon and building it from the ground up. It is the most challenging and yet the most rewarding.

The salon was truly an asset purchase, there was no hand book, no standard operating procedures, nothing that we could build on. We were definitely in over our heads. Guess what? I would totally do it all over again.

I will continue to take risks and make educated bets on myself.
