Community Highlights: Meet Joel Wright of Very Fit Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel Wright.

Hi Joel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a three-sport athlete at Piper High school and played football at Ottawa University in Kansas. The athletic training I did during that time gave me a baseline education in fitness training. I actually was the editor-in-chief of my college newspaper and graduated college getting my first job as a journalist in Marion, KS. After spending a year there, I moved back to KCK in 2014 looking for a fresh start.

I wasn’t really sure where to take my career after moving home and worked different jobs before finding my way into the fitness field as a front desk employee. My whole goal was to find a place I could play basketball for free. Ultimately I ended up managing the front desk staff, handling social media marketing, and teaching group exercise classes, which led me to where I am today.

After picking up a few jobs as an instructor, I realized a desire to start my own personal training business, so I got certified through NASM and began picking up clients in 2019. I’m currently training one-on-one clients in the Waldo area and coaching classes at Orangetheory Fitness in Lenexa and Sweat Studio in Shawnee. Through all of this, I’ve learned there is a lot I don’t know, so while I’m currently completing a corrective exercise specialization, I am ready to begin the next phase of the education.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’m honestly still in the early phase of my career, and there have been rough patches – namely managing an in-person business through COVID (which is still impactful) and finding the best way to help different clients. It’s one thing to have an athletic background, but another to help people develop good habits when they may have never desired to…

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Currently, my training centers on developing athleticism with an emphasis on correcting postural imbalances to create optimal movement efficiency. If we can move better, we can get in shape easier and safer.

I also host group bootcamp classes throughout the city to reach and meet different people. I feel like all fitness professionals are in the business of helping people improve, and ultimately am doing my best to contribute to a healthier society.

As an athlete, I’ll always have a passion to help other athletes reached new heights, but I also have a strong interest in working with service professionals (police officers, firefighters, nurse practitioners, etc.). I’ve learned in some areas, our everyday heroes don’t get the consistent training they may need due to scheduling, stress, and low sleep schedules. If I can help people in those professions move better, whether with me or referred out, it helps society as a whole.

I have more planned for the business, but you have to start somewhere to get to your ultimate goal.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
If you’d like to train with me, email [email protected] or message me on Instagram @j.builtit. Pricing is dependent on session packages and scheduling.

If nothing else, I only have interest in working with people who are truly dedicated to improving. Without that desire, nothing will change.
